Advantages: Self scanning
Disadvantages: None
In reality all supermarkets are much the same. Some things cost more, some less, but overall they average out. The thing that makes Safeway stand out is that they let you scan products yourself. When you enter the store put your ABC card into a machine and pick up a hand scanner. Then whenever you put something into your basket or trolley you can scan it yourself. This saves time. If you wonder how much you have spent so far press the button with the equals ("=") sign and it will tell you. This saves money. When you have finished things do get a little weird. Return the scanner to the rack where you collected it, it doesn't have to be the same slot, and a bar code is printed out. Take this to one of the self scanning check outs and the assistant will scan this and print out the full receipt. To me this seems to be an unneccessary waster of paper and time. I never said queue at the checkout because in my experience only once has there ever been a queue. People still seem to prefer to shop the old fashioned long way. Their loss is my gain because it means I get out of the shop much quicker. From time to time, although it hasn't happened to me, the assitant may have to check your shopping to ensure that you aren't defrauding them but it is purely random and nothing to worry about. Unless you are defrauding them that is. Also you may find items which you can't scan, let them know and they will scan it through and it it to the price of your 'barcode'. Fresh bread seems to be the culprit here. When buying fresh produce don't forget that you need to weigh it and print out a barcode to scan.

lamorna - 31/07/00 Oh dear! My experience of Shop'n'Go was a total nightmare. I was stuck in Safeway's for three hours, and needed a Gin when I got home.....I was re-scanned three times running, and didn't make one mistake. I was told it was random, but not random enough for me I'm afraid. |
