Advantages: Free Parking sometimes available, not as busy as Cardiff.

Disadvantages: Could be a wider selection of shops.

Newport is a city that is being regenerated, and new amenities and facilities are still being constructed. There are a few areas in Newport which are particularly good for shopping, although Newport still has a long way to go to be able to match the shopping quality that Cardiff can currently offer.

The Newport High Street is located on Commercial Street, and a few streets around it. It's quite a long high street, and has all the essential clothing shops, TopShop, H&M, River Island, Burton, Primark, Dorothy Perkins, New Look etc. There are also banks, HSBC, RBS, LLoyds, Barclays, Halifax, The Cooperative etc There are also many other essential stores, WHSmith, Tesco Express, Waterstones, Poundland, Thorntons, Anne Summers, Game, Games Workshop and various travel and estate agents. There is also a large post office, and pubs in the form of Walkabout and the Pen and Wig (which is on Stow Hill). There is an indoor market in Newport too, which features many stalls, selling particularly fresh meat, fish and produce.

Aside from the City Centre, there are also several other shopping concentrations. There is a retail park at Spytty Park, and this has lots of shops, a Big Tesco (though a small big Tesco), a Car Phone Warehouse, Cineworld, Lots of Large Clothing Shops, a Birthdays, a Boots etc There is usually plenty of parking, and the site is easily excessibile from the M4.

The biggest Tesco in Newport is a two tier shopping venue at Cardiff Road. This Tesco really does have everything you could ever want, and has a whole floor for electricals and clothes, highly recommended!

Of course, there are many old fashioned back streets to Newport as well, with family run DIY Shops, Cheap Restaurants, Chemists, Old Sweet Shops etc. There are also some shops on Maesglas road, including Staples, Pets at Home, Halfords, Lidl etc

Summary: Shopping is possible in Newport, though it could get even better as the city is regenerated.
