I've lived in Oxford for a few years now & love the city, however the shopping is one of the few disappointing thing about it. The city centre itself does contain a variety of shops from the small independent stores to the larger department stores. However the selection itself isn't on par with other major towns & cities. In comparison, I know a lot of people prefer to travel to nearby Reading or Milton Keynes as the shopping is far superior. I have lived in Oxford now for two and a half years. I love Oxford and I love Oxfordshire but the shopping is a bit of a dissapointment. Around Oxford we have: Oxford City centre Botley road retail park Cowley centre Cowley retail park In Oxford city, we have a decent selection of shops and most of the main brands, however, the down side is that they are mostly on a small scale and not decently sized shops as you would expect to find in a UK city. There are a number of individual shops or boutiques if you head away from Cornmarket street although these can be either difficult to find or quite over priced. My personal ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Shopping Areas in Oxford: My Oxford shopping nightmare! (367 words)

I'm a student (yes...one of those awful things!) studying at Oxford Brookes University (based in Headington). I've been living in Oxford for nearly two years now. Personally, I HATE Oxford for shopping. This is for various reasons. Firstly, it's a nightmare to get to. I get the bus into town but it costs so much for such a short journey (£1.90 return). If you want to get there by car that's even worse. Parking is hard to come by...and when you do finally park you won't be impressed with the cost (£1.50/hr if parking near Debenhams). I would recommend the park and ride for visitors from outside Oxford. THere are numerous park and ride ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Oxford - a city for many tastes (390 words)

Whilst Oxford may not be the biggest place in the world - in fact it's pretty small when the students and tourists don't count, it is the only place of any size for some distance, and so it has become an importance shopping destination for many people. The vast difference in the people who shop there are reflected in the shops, and the different areas in the city. On the Cowley Road to the east of the city lies a Tesco metro surrounded by shops selling pretty much everything you could ever want at prices that seem well out of date, but you won't find any high street chains here, or any labels, it's all small businesses doing very well in supporting a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Shopping Areas in Oxford: London without the crowds (214 words)
by - written on 18/05/01 (Useful, 171 readings)

I love shopping in the heart of Oxford! There are 2 covered shopping malls and a network of streets that would give Oxford Street (no pun intended) a run for its money. In addition to favourite high street names, there are curious little market areas and specialist shops. If department stores are your style, Oxford has a big Alders and Debenhams. There are plenty of clothes shops from budget to designer. Children are well catered for too, with many well known clothes and toy shops. Coffee shops and eateries to satisfy all tastes abound. From Burgers and Pizzas to Tappas and Thai Set against the backdrop of Oxford's historic ...  Read the complete review
