So where is the shopping mecca of the south? Where can you snap up bargains without triggering a warning letter from your bank manager? Southampton with its massive new shopping centre? Brighton with its thriving independents and swanky Lanes area? Booming Reading perhaps? Or the sprawling Bluewater complex by Dartford off the M25. Nope, I reckon it's Portsmouth. Okay, you can stop laughing now. I'm being serious. I know the city's image is more Horatio Nelson than Harvey Nicks but times have changed. There are numerous shopping areas in Portsmouth, some small, some large. I doubt that visitors to the City are too bothered about the smaller shopping areas in as they are little more than a row of small traditional shops. But I will come back to them in a bit. The main shopping area in Portsmouth is the appropriately named Commercial Road and Arundel Street, part pedestrianised area-part shopping mall (The Cascades). All the usual high street names can be found here from Woolworths to Wallis but personally I find the selection of shops here a little limited.
