Taunton is the county town of Somerset situated in the south west of England with a population of around 70,000. It is probably most famous for it’s cider production and the cricket ground of Somerset County Cricket Club where Ian Botham and Viv Richards had such success in the late seventies and early eighties.
As most major towns in England, Taunton has it’s fair share of things to do like the Odeon Cinema which has eight screens and also Hollywood Bowl is just across from the cinema and has over 20 ten pin bowling lanes. And other than the selection of clubs and bars in Taunton there is of course a great deal of shopping areas.
First off we have the town centre where there are many of the major chains like Virgin Megastore, Debenhams, Boots, Laura Ashley, Burton, Next, British Home Stores, Primark, Vodafone, Orange, Woolworths, Shoe Express, Waterstones, Marks and Spencer, D2, Argos, Cash Converters and Sports World. There’s two Thomas Cook travel agents and also a Thomson and going places. There’s also the Old Market Centre where there are stores such as JJB Sports, Barratts, Greggs,
Over the road from Iceland In the High Street there is Hatchers which is Taunton's own superstore, they sell clothes, jewellrey, electronic equipment, toys and board games and there's also a hairdressers and a cafe there and a selection of furniture including beds and sofas and chairs.
There are of course the major supermarkets, Asda, Morrisons and Tesco and also two Sainsbury’s stores, one of which is situated in the out of town riverside shopping area which also has Halfords, Mothercare, Comet, Currys, PC World, Staples, Homebase and B&Q is situated next to Hollywood bowl and there is also a McDonalds drive thru situated between Hollywood Bowl and the Odeon cinema.
There used to be two markets in Taunton but the cattle market was closed down recently due to relocation to a site outside Taunton but there is still a market in the high street where there are food stalls with items from around the world and also wine, cheese, meat and cider stalls at cheap prices, this market seems to be getting more and more international.
There’s also a decent shopping area called Priory Fields Retail Park which is situated near Obridge viaduct on the way out of town towards the cinema out at Hankridge and the motorway, the Priory Fields Retail Park has Wickes, Harvey’s, MFI, Pets @ home and Land of Leather among the stores.
The Town has many places around the shopping area to park like the Multi storey car park which is connected to the Old Market Centre and there is also plenty of room for parking further down the road once you get out of the Old Market Centre. Sainsburys car park has plenty of spaces for people shopping around that area of town.
Taunton is a particularly good place for shopping due to the amount of choice available and also because after a couple of hours shopping you can relax and have a drink in many of the bars or coffee shops located around town. These include Costa and Starbucks and also Café Nero and of course the great Wetherspoons Pubs The Perkin Warbeck and the Coal Orchard and there are plenty of other places where you can have a wonderful meal aswell as at these two Wetherspoons Pubs.
So summing up Taunton has a lot of what most people would want from their town. And the town’s shopping experience is enjoyed by people from all around who come to visit from time to time and also the people who live in Villages around Taunton.
It doesn’t mean that you should only do your shopping in Taunton if you live here but that there’s plenty of places if you do. I still like to go to places like Cribbs Causeway and Broadmead in Bristol once in a while because of the experience of going somewhere different.
Summary: A great place for shopping
