Advantages: Great special offers and cheap wine

Disadvantages: Can be a limited range in stock if you want something out of the ordinary.

I live in a village where the only supermarket is a Somerfield, although there are out of town Tesco's and Sainsbury's and even a big Waitrose nearby. A few years ago, shopping in Somerfield was a frustrating experience as they *never* seemed to have whatever it was I really wanted, and suffered from empty shelf syndrome whichever day or time of day I chose to go in there.......

Things have changed. I now choose to shop there whenever I'm able to as the reliability of the store has changed, and the special offers are far better than any of the other supermarkets.

Somerfield usually enclose one of their leaflets in the local newspaper so you can see what special offers are going to be available that fortnight, and there are usually *very* good reductions and buy one get one frees.....

Their prices are *particularly* good on wines when they have a special offer on them, and I've very often had a really nice red or white at £1.99 a bottle, or a great cava for £2.99!

I've also recently stocked up on penguin bars...enough to do packed lunches for my brigade for the next century! AS far as I remember they were selling at 24 bars for 99p!

This is definitely the place to stock up store cupboards, fridges and freezers when the special offers are on, and my only complaint is that when I do that, their trolleys are not big enough, and nor are the conveyor belts at the checkouts.

Get there just before they close (you have to time this one just right, it needs a bit of practice!) and you'll often find all the reduction cabinet contents at 10p!

The Somerfield mag isn't bad either, and unlike some, it's free. I have to admit to being more interested in the competitions than the recipes, but from my cursory glance at those, they seem good too!

Here unlike other stores, your loyalty points are converted into Argos vouchers and I recently paid £7 at Argos for a £67 food processor t
hanks to these! I think they end up being a lot more useful than the Tesco scheme and you get more far more quickly.
I find Tesco very expensive these days and can rarely find any offers comparable to Somerfield.

If you gave up on your local Somerfield store a long time ago in favour of one of the supermarket giants, go have a look again, you might be pleasantly surprised.
And if you get one of those cheap bottles of wine (some are really surprisingly good) enjoy!

Hiya :> I've rewritten my op on Somerfield. I missed out the wine though. Will have to add later!

£3.99 is an expensive wine for me!! <g>
My best buy was a mistake on somerfield's part - someone had labelled their cava wrongly so I got 2 bottles of their best vintage cava for £2.99 each!!

I live right next door to a Somerfields and a BP and so get my points wherever I go! Somerfields is great for standard shopping on a budget but has very few frills. I agree about the wine though; Chainti Classico for £3.99 at the moment and it's wonderful!
