Advantages: Can spread the cost of Christmas
Disadvantages: Christmas takes up 1/4 of a year rather than one week.
Is it my imagination or is Christmas getting earlier each year? I was in my local supermarket last month and whst did I see as I walked in but Christmas cards, wrapping paper and advent calendars. I am amazed that shops can start selling their Christmas stock this early. What must it be doing to the poor kids who see the advent calendars and think it must be nearly Christmas. Well it's not and I know that maybe it is good to be able to spread the cost of Christmas over 3 months but that's a quarter of the year. Surely people could save the money rather than feel that they should spend it in September on all the family sized biscuit and sweet packets. It also annoys me that birthday cards almost disappear between September and December, isn't anyone born in this part of the year anymore? At least half of my family have birthdays in this part of the year and I feel that they are cheated of a proper birthday as all everyone else can think about is Christmas. Shops shouldn't be allowed to stock Christmas stuff until at least November so that our noses aren't rubbed with Christmas at every turn. I feel that it spoils Christmas as the excitment isn't there any more because we've had three months of it already.

- 10/10/00 Oh how I sympathise! My birthday is at the very beginning of January and it may as well not exist! Everyone is too hungover, too poor or to fedup with going out to celebrate. I think I'll do the same as the Queen and have another birthday at a much better time eg May! |
