I have been a customer of Tesco Opticians for around 2/3 years now. I visit to get my sight test and contact lens check/aftercare appointments. This is a review of the opticians in Risca, South Wales.
In this particular store the opticians is based at the back. On walking in to the store, I was unable to see signs showing where the opticians were and it is a big store so if you don't know where you are going it could be a slight problem. There always seem to plenty of staff around though so you can always ask. As I have been coming to the same store for a few years ago I knew where they were located.
*The opticians section*
It is an open section so if you want privacy this is difficult. There is of course a separate room where you have your check up, which is the main thing. I personally don't mind it being an open section, but it could bother some people especially if you are giving out personal information.
There is a small privacy screen at the front and mounted on this is a large selection of the glasses that they store. They seem to have one optician on a day and a few assistants who help with payment, purchasing and after care. The name of the day's opticians is on the wall for everyone to see. There is also very bright lighting in the section, which can be a bit hard on the eye but I guess is also necessary as it makes it easier to try on glasses and see what they look like in true daylight.
There are lots of different glasses and several mirrors which you can look in when trying on. I personally use contact lenses most days of the week so rarely use glasses. I have found that in terms of price Tesco's is also quite expensive so I always get my prescription and buy cheaper glasses online.
*Customer service - before*
I had ordered contact lenses via the Tesco's internet site - using clubcard boost vouchers as part payment. One day in work last week I had an answerphone message on my mobile telling me that as my prescription was out of date I had to come back in and thus my order was cancelled. This was a bit frustrating that they couldn't simply put the order on hold - however I suppose I understand that if your prescription changes you would need to do a new order anyway. In any case my order has been refunded (although I am still waiting for the refund) - I have also had to make contact with a few departments as I haven't had my points back yet.
In any case I digress...
I made the appointment online. The manager than contacted me a few days before to make sure I was aware that I would need a contact lens check up and an eye prescription check up. He then told me to bring my glasses and ensure I had contact lenses in. I raised the issue with him at the time that I was not aware that my prescription was out of date - to which he replied that I had been contacted by phone. He then went on to tell me that Tesco store and opticians are different departments and they have different systems so they don't share information.
*Customer service - during/after*
On the day of my appointment I was contacted a few hours before to make sure I was attending. I arrived a few minutes early for my appointment and greeted very warmly by the assistant and she seated me in the waiting area. She informed me that I shouldn't have been told to put my lenses in first - this meant there was a delay to my appointment as I had to wait for the optician to do my eyesight test first.
The optician came out to greet me after 25 minutes of waiting (she was 5 minutes back from lunch). The assistants were very apologetic however and explained that they had their Christmas lunch so I didn't mind too much waiting.
This took around 30 minutes for the check up and after care. The optician was very polite, thorough and friendly. The room was very hygienic and clean, and the optician practiced good hygiene by washing her hands and seemed very clean and presented (important for a job which demands close up interaction). She was also very calming and reassuring and when I asked (lots) of questions she answered them in a way I could understand. She reassured me that I needed -
an eyesight test every 2 years
a contact lens check every 1 year
And I was also told that now they have my email address they can let me know when I am due next.
You can use your clubcard to collect points. Also, currently there is a clubcard boost offer on - so you can exchange your points for double their value! Appointments in this store are available 9am-7pm.
If it wasn't for the great customer service, I may have considered going elsewhere due to the niggles with Tesco's ordering system. Whilst I am a bit stuck on the fence about recommending this service to others I am also mindful of the positive - flexible opening hours, free parking (as opposed to some city centre located opticians), online booking and you also get those clubcard points. I do need to denote two stars for the time I had to spend waiting though which just wasn't acceptable (and I did state unhappiness about this at the time - the assistant I spoke with 3was incredibly nice and apologetic though).
I been a spectacle wearer since the age of 5 (a very long time ago!) and over the years have tried all of the usual opticians, Specsavers, Vision Express, Dolland and Aitchison. I have had a few attempts at wearing contact lenses but to be honest find them a bit fiddly and have quickly given up on them. I first tried Tesco Opticians about four years ago when we moved house which was near a Tesco store and I have always received excellent service and been very happy with my glasses.
As there is glaucoma in my family I have an eye test every 12 months and had actually had an eye test at Tesco in February but hadn't got round to doing anything further, which was mainly down to lack of money and also liking the glasses I am currently wearing. My prescription had only changed slightly so I wasn't too worried about doing any damage to my eyes. It was actually last week when I noticed a new scratch on my right lens that I decided to revisit the opticians to choose some new glasses.
When the assistant brought my details up on the computer she pointed out that my last eye test was three months ago and recommended that I had a further eye test to make sure that my prescription was fully up to date and that the optician could see me in an hours time. I was pleasantly surprised by this as I would have been happy with the prescription from three months and felt really quite cared for and that Tesco had 'gone that extra mile' in customer service.
After a nice cuppa and a slice of cake in Tesco café I went back to the opticians and had a further eye test which I found to be very thorough, it was a different optician and he made me feel very comfortable, and really took his time in finding the right lenses for me. The optician came over to me while I was choosing and asked if I needed any help, and he suggested a few options which to be honest I would not have picked up myself, however he was absolutely spot on and they looked great. I suppose he is used to looking at people's faces and just knowing instinctively what would suit them. I ended up with a full frame brown pair which are a rectangular shape and a burgundy half rimmed pair with a lovely flower detail on the sides, which I feel are my 'summer' frames and the brown ones are for winter or just when I fancy a change. I can't remember the makes but they are both from the designer range.
As I am at the age when I need varifocals the glasses are a bit more expensive, and I also have the anti glare coating on both at a cost of £30 each. The total price I paid was £288 however the optician said if I had paid full price for the two pairs it would have cost £568 so I feel I have got a good deal. As my prescription is quiet complicated (long sighted in one eye, short sighted in the other, and astigmatism in both) my glasses are never done in the 24 hours which is sometimes advertised, but I hope to receive a text within the next few days to go and collect them.
Not sure if all the opening times are the same but the Tesco opticians at New Oscott is open from 9-8 Monday to Thursday, 9-7 Friday and Saturday and 10-4 Sunday so plenty of opportunity to go after work and to suit all. Everyone I came into contact with at this branch were extremely helpful and friendly and made me feel like a valued customer. I recommend visiting this Opticians to everyone and will continue to get my eye tests and glasses from here.
THREE DAYS AGO I TOOK MY GLASSES BACK TO TESCO AS THE ARM HAD FALLEN OFF IMAGINE MY SURPRISE WHEN THEY RANG ME TO INFORM ME THAT MY GLASSES COULD NOT BE REPAIRED FREE AS I HAD STRESSED THEM OUT BY TAKING THEM OFF WITH ONE HAND DO THEY HAVE CAMERAS AT MY PLACE OF WORK CHECKING UP ON ME ... AS I ONLY WEAR THEM FOR CLOSE WORK I DO TAKE THEM ON AND OFF DURING THE DAY BUT AT NO TIME WHEN I ORDERED THEM WAS I GIVEN LESSONS ON HOW TO TAKE THEM ON AND OFF I CAN PAY £65.00 TO HAVE THESE SIX MONTH OLD GLASSES REPAIRED IF I CHOOSE WELL TESCO YOU CAN JOG ON IF YOU THINK I AM GIVING YOU MY CUSTOM AGAIN YOU GET ENOUGH MONEY OUT OF ME DOING MY WEEKLY SHOP ....ASDA IS LOOKING GOOD FROM NOW ON I AM GOING TO TRADING STANDARDS ABOUT THIS I WORK FULL TIME AND DONT GET ANYTHING FOR NOTHING AND FEEL VERY LET DOWN BY YOU!!!!!!!
I've avoided going to the opticians for a lot of years after more than one horrible experience at Specsavers, but I decided this year that it was finally time to go back to the opticians and get a proper prescription (I'd been buying contact lense online for years and just changing the prescription myself when I felt my vision getting a bit blurry. Yes I know how bad that is!). I decided on Tesco Opticians because they offer free sight tests and I don't know of any other opticians that do this other than as a special offer sometimes.
I booked my sight test online, which was very easy to do. After inputting my details I had to input the store I wanted to have my sight test at and then choose a time to have the test. To be honest I was a little disappointed that there were no appointments available when I wanted, and I ended up having to take time out of work to have my test, which is not ideal, but hey ho such is life. After I'd chosen my appointment time and booked online I received confirmation by both email and text message. I also received a reminder via text message the day before my appointment.
They advise you to get to your appointment 5-10 minutes early for pre-test checks, so I got to the store about 20 minutes early and wandered around until 10 minutes before my appointment. When I went to the opticians there didn't seem to be any staff around so I hovered around the appointment desk for a while and after about 5 minutes someone appeared from one of the rooms in the back. She was very friendly and welcoming and after checking my details she took me into the room she'd come from for the pre-test checks, which included testing the strength of my current glasses and using a couple of machines to test different aspects of my eyes. The actual checks only took about 2 minutes in total, but she spent ages logging on to 2 different computers before she could start each check. After the checks were complete she took me out to the waiting area and asked me to have a seat until the optician came to get me.
I was only waiting about a minute before the optician called me into her examination room. She too was very friendly and welcoming, and I felt at ease with her, which is something I'd never felt in Specsavers. Before beginning the eye test the optician asked me about my current prescription, how long it was since I'd had an eye test etc, and to be honest I'd been expecting a lecture when I said it was about 10 years since my last test and the prescription I was wearing was a good few years old, but she was lovely and never spoke down to me at all.
The optician talked me through everything as she was performing the test, and was always keen to make sure I was comfortable, which again is completely different to my experiences of Specsavers. After the eye test she took the time to talk me through the process for getting contact lenses from them but as I already wear lenses (even though I've never had them officially prescribed) she gave me an 'unofficial' prescription for my lenses for if I wanted to continue to buy them online. She also gave me a pair of lenses in the prescription she'd given me to try out for the day, which I thought was great.
After the test she took me back out to the appointments desk where she gave me a copy of my prescription and then left me to pick out some glasses, saying just to give any of the staff a shout if I needed anything. Although the opticians area was quite small they stock quite a good range of frames, from basic, cheaper styles to expensive designer options. I decided to take advantage of their BOGOF offer on frames over £65, and it didn't take me long to choose 2 pairs of designer frames. Once I'd chosen my frames I just took them to another staff member who was sat at a desk trying to look busy and she quickly sorted them out for me, measuring my pupillary distance to be sure the glasses would be right for me. She did advise me I might want to choose a different frame as one of the ones I'd chosen may not look so great with the thickness of lenses for my strong prescription (after suggesting I pay 'up to £90' to have the lenses thinned), but I chose against it as I only ever wear my glasses at home anyway so I'm not really that fussed on how they look. She then took me back to the appointments desk to pay and advised me that my glasses should be ready to collect in 6 days, but I'd receive a phone call as soon as they got them in anyway.
I received a phone call 4 days later to say my glasses were ready, which surprised me as the lady who dealt with my purchase had said a prescription as strong as mine often takes longer than the quoted time frame. I also received a text message the next day to say they were ready.
When I went to pick up my glasses there were a couple of staff members stood by the appointments desk so I just told them I needed to pick up my glasses and one of them ushered me to a desk where she asked my name and then shouted out some numbers to the other, who went and picked up my 2 pairs of glasses from their pigeon holes. She then in turn took each pair of glasses from it's cased and asked me to try them on, asking me specifics like how they fit behind the ears and on the bridge of the nose, and how my vision was. She seemed keen to make sure they were right fro me first time so that I didn't have to come back and get them adjusted, but she did say that I could pop in any time to have them adjusted if after wearing them for a while I felt the fit wasn't quite right. And that was it, I left with 2 lovely new pairs of glasses.
Overall I couldn't be more impressed with the service I received at Tesco Opticians. Everything was in such stark contrast to my experiences at Specsavers; the staff are friendly and helpful and I felt completely at ease throughout the whole process. They offer a good range of frames and of course the free eye exam and 2 for 1 deals make it well worth choosing them over others, as well as the fact that you can earn club card points on your purchases. The few minor niggles like no-one being around when I first turned up can easily be forgiven when they give such an all round great service, and I think I'm going to finally book myself in for a contact lens consultation after years of avoiding it. I'd definitely recommend Tesco Opticians to anyone.
Have been a regular at Tesco opticians for a couple of years now both with my daughter and my mum in law. With the exception of 1 visit, where my daughter had a very obnoxious optician we have had great service. We have always found the eye test to be thorough and accurate and the price, delivery and fitting service second to none. The team leader we always deal with is courteous, efficient and knowledgable and obviously goes the extra mile to ensure customer service is number 1 - additionally the other ladies always seem to be helpful and focused on doing a good job. We will refuse to have anything to do with 'that' particular optician who nearly undid all of the great work the rest of the staff had done, but we decided that he shouldn't ruin a good thing. We haven't seen him since so don't even know if he is still around. It is local, longer hours, better price, faster service, and you can get on with your shopping too so has a lot going for it. Criticisms - it is quite small in terms of floor space so does not compare to the large floor space shops of other firms, but I feel it is a trade off we are prepared to take with so many other advantages
I have had to wear glasses from my late teenage years and I always know whenever there is a very slight difference in my eyes so generally never manage to get to the 2 year check up. A couple of years ago I knew that there had been a change in my eyes and happened to be in my local Tesco store when it came over the tannoy that they had some optician appointments available so I decided to go and find out how much an eye test would be.
In our store the opticians is rather small, there is a bench that will sit three people but then there is hardly any leg room as there is a partition in front of your with a desk behind, there are three desks in total but all are in quite cramped areas and I feel that more space should have been given to the opticians to make it more comfortable for their customers.
I have always been seen quickly when I have used this service, when I went for the impromptu appointment and when I have made appointments in advance they always seem to run on time which is great as most places never seem to be able to keep to appointment times. The assistant took my glasses and tested them to see what my current prescription was and then I was taken into the room for my tests. The room again is rather cramped although there is room for what is need you just feel there should be more room. My tests were the same as when I have used other opticians so I have no worries that the tests weren't as good and the optician spent quite a while checking into the back of my eyes apparently checking my eyes are healthy.
As always I needed new glasses and I was shown to a display on the wall which again just seems like there isn't enough room for it as it is on a wall between the opticians and the Tesco Direct desk as if they didn't have any other space for it. The range of glasses isn't exactly great, there are about 6 strips of glasses holding about 10 pairs each so there are only about 60 pairs to choose from and half of them are mens anyway. I am quite happy with a limited range as I always pick simple metal frames in a dark colour and they provide glasses to this description, there are a few designer frames too so they do cater for a wide range of people just not a wide choice in each price range.
The cost is the main benefit of using Tesco rather than Specsavers which is where I used to go, at Tesco your eye test is always free even if you do not recieve any benefits whereas I have paid £22 in Specsavers before and this isn't even recently. The frames for the glasses start at £15 and this was £10 the first time I used them so the simple frames are very cheap but they are pefect for the job and are not weak or flimsy. I have a friend who has bought designer glasses from Tesco aswell and she commented how cheap they were on these too and lets face it with the current economy noone wants to pay more than needed.
At my last appointment I was asked if I have ever thought of trying contact lenses which I have tried once before but couldn't get away with so I decided that I would give them another trial. The trial was completely free and I was given lenses to be taken out every night and put into solution which was also provided free and then worn again the next day, this was to be done for a weeks trial before having a follow up with them. They won't let you take the contacts until they are sure that you can put them in and take them out without having a problem, I do have difficulty with this so this did take a while to master and the lady was very patient with me. I didn't like the fact that the room I was taken into to do this was then used by another customer and her rowdy kids who were watching what I was doing and putting me off, I feel this sort of thing should be done in a private room. Unfortunately again I didn't manage to get away with the contacts as they just make my eyes sore so I have to stick with glasses.
The price is the main reason that I use Tesco and so does all my family, you can also collect clubcard points on your purchase which is always an added bonus. The range isn't massive but it holds enough for most people. The staff are very friendly and the manager in our branch always remembers his customers which can be more of a pain to be honest as if he sees you he stops you to chat. The main drawback of this service in our store is that they simply have not given it enough room for you to feel comfortable but the prices are that good that I can put up with this. I would recommend the service and it just shows how much the likes of Specsavers must be making in comparison.
If you hate hassle, stress and rude staff DO NOT even think about going into a Tesco opticians! The bad service I received really proves they should stick to standard supermarkets! In a nut shell, ordered two pairs of varifocals in August and they were just not right. Unhappy with the quality of the glasses and the clarity of the lenses I asked them for a new set. This took some persuasion to the manager to get, which was surprising as they were the more expensive glasses. After a month of waiting because they said they lost the original glasses I went back into the store to only be told they had been broken. I returned two more times and each time they told me that they were ready for collection, but strangely the glasses had gone missing again and no one knew what had happened to them! I finally got a refund today, in December!! They could still give me no answer as to what had happened to the glasses. What I don't understand is even though they didn't know what had happened to them why didn't they just order another new pair months ago when the second set went missing????
Poor service, poor quality and a complete waste of time. I'm now off to Specsavers!!!

I have visited Tesco opticians a number of times for my regular eye tests. I wear glasses every day and have sporadically tried contact lenses (I love not having to wear glasses, but always forget to get my stash of lenses replenished).
I first decided to go to Tesco for an eye test as it was just easier to get to, why bother trekking all the way to another opticians when you can get your eyes tested on the same day as doing a big shop?
I found that the optician section within my local Tesco was tucked neatly away at the back of the shop and although the main desk and the selection of frames to look at was open to the rest of the shop, the consultation tables (where they check if frames fit your face) were behind a screen and the actual tests were taken out in separate rooms. This had been a slight worry for me before I first visited, that I would be getting fitted right in front of everyone popping in to buy eggs and milk!
I found all the staff to be as friendly and professional as in any other opticians. They were just as eager to help and all my eye test with them have been thorough and the results wonderful.
However, while getting eye tests and lenses from Tesco opticians have been a wonderful experience for me, I have always found that their selection of frames has been minimal to say the least and in most instances I have had to take my prescription somewhere else.
The appointment times at my local Tesco opticians run until fairly late in the evening (around 6:30pm) which is unusual for an opticians and makes things much easier for people coming from a 9-5 job.
Although I have often found that Tesco frames are lacking in 'young' style adult frames they so seem to have a much wider selection for both children and the more mature.
In my experience the staff and treatment at Tesco Opticians have always been so friendly that I will not let the selection of frames be enough to put me off going there for my tests, after all I'll be going there at some point for shopping anyway!
I think Tescos Opticians have recieved some very bad review but they really are not that bad.
I decided to have an eye test when I was receiving headaches when using the computer and problems reading at distances. I attended the Huge tescos in Brockworth Gloucester and they booked me in very quickly for a free eye test. The staff were polite and friendly and seemed to know what they were doing.
They were running late on the day of the exam but they were very friendly and apologetic so what more can you ask for.
The test constisted of the sight test, exam exam for health, gloucomba and periferal vision. The test was about 30 mins long and the optician was very knowledgable and professional.
They gave me a perscription at the end and pointed me towards the frames but did not do any kind of hard sell. They are very easy going and Idid not feel like Ihad to buy something then and there.
I left with my perscription to decide on frames another day.
I have never worn glasses before and so did not want to spend up to £100 on a pair of glasses first off. Luckily Tescos do a low cost frame starting from £10. This seemed perfect and so I decided on a pair of these to get me used to them before I splashed out.
The glasses were ready in 5 days and they are absolutly fine.
They have no trendy name on them or any trendy colours but they do for glasses for driving and computer work if you was living to a budget.
They did not look or feel cheap and do the job. It does prove you do not need to spend lots of many on glasses if you are happy not to walk around with a name on them. The ones I picked are plain black thin rimmed glasses.
Not being an expert on glasses I can not say how different these are to the branded glasses but I can not find fault in these glasses.
The lenses are clear and sit on the face nicely and they are comfortable sitting behind the ears also.
For £10 you really can't go wrong with these. If I have a spare £200 then I probably would go for a nice branded name with hi-tech lenses and frames but these glases are for driving and distance things and are not for everyday use so I do not see the point in spending so much money.
I'm more than happy with not only the glasses but also the service from Tescos. At the prices you cant complain anyway but even without the low prices the service is brilliant.
Writing this review on behalf of a family member who has visited this store 4 times or more now and the glasses are still not right!!
First visit eye test done fine!
2nd Visit glasses waiting in pigeonhole no phone call to say, so made the phone call and visited the store hence motorway trip the GLASSES not right was told to take them and get used to them????
Next phone call to store not happy they are simply not right, excuse they made was they made an error they got the plus and minus signs incorrect when they sent them off!
Waiting for phone call no phone call so telephoned again they are waiting there again in pigeonhole so another trip down the motorway still not right!!! This time it was a typing error!!!Asked for a refund they said that would be ok of the messing about and inconveinance caused, then the glasses came back again they are still not right so asked to speak to a manager no manager available till next week WHAT????? Gets a phone call form a manager that says i can not have a refund now as they pescribed me single lens when my original glasses were verifocals who are the experts here for goodness sakes???? So we asked for the records so i can take my perscription elsewhere he said you can't have your records due to data protection act WHAT A JOKE cough cough excuse me there are my records its my DATA!!!
Yep should of gone to SPECSAVERS and from now on always will as Tesco do not specialise as an OPTICIANS but a money conveyor belt i will get my money and my records and i have passedthe kind word onto family and friends so your loss!!!
Have just had an appalling experience at the Opticians in Tesco, Maldon. We bought my daughter a pair of Hannah Montana glasses and after two weeks noticed that the paint was chipping off in four places. We returned to the shop and the assistant offered to fit the lenses into a pair of display frames but then the manager appeared and stopped her saying that the glasses had been damaged and we would have to pay for new frames. The glasses have not been had anything other than normal wear and tear for a 7 yr old and have definitely not been dropped. We have had 5 frames before and never had any trouble. The frames are obviously substandard and the customer service was disgusting. Having been a loyal customer of Tesco for years, I am incredibly disappointed. Never again!
Having been cursed with bad eye sight for many years now a trip to the opticians is another one of those unwanted expenses that I tend to put off until the headaches get bad and I can't really see. Eye tests these days seem to vary from £20-£30 depending on where you go however I had heard that Tesco did eye tests for £10 so I thought I would pop along to my local store and book myself an appointment however when I got there I found that they actually charge nothing for their eye tests that's right it is free I am not on any kind of benefits and I still get it free so I was very happy with this and booked myself in for the next day (today) for my eye test.
The reception staff were really friendly the girl took my details name and address and mobile phone number and wrote down my appointment on a little card for me so I wouldn't forget the time. I booked the appointment at around 12 and at 3pm I got text message to remind that my appointment was booked for the following day and if I needed to cancel or re-arrange the number to dial. I thought that this was useful especially if you have booked in advance and have a tendency to forget things as I do.
Today I arrived 20 minutes early for my appointment I was going to do my shopping first but just checked and the staff let me go in early. First off I was taken into a room again by the very friendly reception staff in there she did one test to see where my sight was at approximately and I then had to sit on another machine and have 3 puffs of air in both eyes I think this was a reflex test and was a little bit funny I jumped a mile the first time it went off. Once I had sat these tests I went into another room where the optician was. He again took my details and asked me questions about my eye sight any floaters headaches? My answer to both of these was yes but I think it is due to straining because my lenses need hanging. He asked me to show him where the pain was and I did he said he would do some extra tests for my eyes just to make sure nothing was wrong but first I had the regular eye test with the funny glasses and the letters and coloured circle. The optician was very good he kept checking and when he had come to a conclusion of what he thought I needed he doubled checked and let me have a little wonder out the room equipped with optician glasses to make sure I wasn't dizzy with them on I was really pleased with the test and service. Once I had finished in there I had the test for my headaches looking in a box and pressing a clicker for how many green dots I saw. The results are my eyes need a new prescription which is causing my headaches and nothing more sinister than that.
Tesco also stock a wide range of glasses which I am going to order next week once I have been paid. the frames varied from value at around £15 to designer which cost up to £100 plus but when you spend £65 you get a pair free so I think as the eye test was free I shall be treating my self to 2 pairs for the price of one. On leaving the opticians I was given my prescription to take away with out having to ask for it and have been asked to return in 12 months for a re test.

I recently booked an appointment at my local Tesco Opticians and after booking but before attending I read some reviews here on DooYoo and felt there was a very negative vibe towards them...but, I battled forward and attended my appointment.
Anyway, I booked both a standard eye exam and also a contact lens consultation for the same time, 12pm. Four days before my appointment I rang Tesco in order to change times due to work committments and changed it to 3pm and I was assured that all was fine.
I arrive at my 3pm appointment on the day and the lady at the computers first comment was "Oh, It's you, we seem to have some confusion over when you're meant to be here".
So, I explained what my original time was, why I called to change it and told her my new time was 3pm. (They had me booked in at both 12pm and 3pm now!).
I was asked to sit down and I took a seat and the first thing I noticed was the door of the examination room was wide open and I could hear everything that was being said between the optician and the person being examined....not very confidential! To add to this, the way the waiting area is situated, I could have simply leant forward slightly and seen everything that was going on.
The next thing I noticed was a stock cupboard on my right, with the door wide open with stacks of cardboard boxes everywhere....professional image anyone?!
So, 5 minutes later I get called into the examination room and I already had my contacts in, I brought my last prescription, my current glasses and all the supplies to change my contacts and my eyes were then checked with my contacts in.
After 10 minutes or so the optician let me know the contacts were fine although I should try some of their own for better comfort and I accepted to try a trial pair, which the optician got for me.
He then attempted to approach me and put the contacts in my eyes himself, to which I politely replied "No thanks!!!...I can manage!!"
The optician then literally threw the contact cases on the table next to me....RUDE!!
Once I had them in, I was then informed "There was some confusion over your appointments so I can only do your contact consultation, I will have to arrange another appointment next week to do your eye test"....SO...It's their fault they messed up and I have to wait a whole week to have an eye test which I have already waited a week to attend anyway?....POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!
All in all, it was a sham. It was very unprofessional and I felt very mistreated and I wouldn't reccommend them to anyone, the despite this, they consultation I did have was fine, apart from the throwing of the contacts!!
I did take a look at the glasses out of interest and I noticed there was no signage to say which were mens and which were womans and all were very similar. In general, the selection is very limited and poor.
I used to be with Specsavers opticians and to be honest I've gone through quite a number of opticians with moving around and finding better deals. However, I was paying so much for my lenses on direct debit each month and that wasn't including solutions so I decided to start searching for better opticians. This is when a friend recommended I give Tesco Opticians a try, I was apprehensive at first as they don't have a background in this field but I booked myself in for an eye test which they assured my was free and if I wasn't happy I didn't have to make any purchases.
When I got there a friendly assistant asked me my name and what time I was booked in for. She then told me to sit and wait for my optician to come out and talk me through everything. He then came out and took me into the eye test room where they ask you a lot of questions about your health and your family too and check your eyes to see they are healthy. I then got a test for contact lenses and my glasses and then he wrote it down on my form and told me to take it outside to the desk when I was ready.
The test was very thorough it lasted a good 20- 30 minutes but we went through everything and I was more than happy when I walked out. I was talked through all of the different types of lenses as I had some from before but they recommended a newer kind. They then said if I wanted new frames they could do them but at that moment I wasn't interested so she didn't push which I found a breath of fresh air and also they gave me a nice designer glasses case as my old one was broken, for free.
TERMS OF TESCO OPTICIANS
So, when you decide to proceed with Tesco Opticians they register you onto the system but the strange thing with them is they don't remind you if you need an eye test it's sort of left to you to take control. This is good in some ways but bad in another, although my last optician harassed me sending me eye test reminder postcards it was ridiculous. So, I usually get an eye test every 6 months but I don't live near my Tesco Optician so it's a drive to get there which is why if they can send them out without a test I'd rather they would.
So, when you order your lenses I'm sure you can order 3 months worth or 6 but I always go for 3 as it costs something like £28 a month depending on the type you go for. The lenses being purchased here means you gain Clubcard points at the same time which I think is fantastic. I ordered them and they usually come within a week always packaged really securely, I couldn't ask for more. However, you can't set up a direct debit with them for lenses you just have to go back when you're running low and order more but in a way it's good as you are not tied down to direct debits. Also their solution is a good price as well so it means you can get it as and when you need.

There are not a lot around it is only at bigger store so check first. Tesco Opticians do designer sunglasses as well and I've yet to update my frames with them, but I have noticed they do have a wide selection if you need to update yours.
They have a wide selection of different types of contact lenses here too and it is literally just a case of phoning up and booking and appointment. They are open 7 days a week and have a lot of time slots so even if you work you will be able to get seen. I think so far they have always been good, much cheaper than what I was paying before and they offer a reliable service. My lenses always come on time, I have never had to phone up and complain about where they are or why they have sent the wrong ones so it is definitely a good start.

Most people know about Tesco the huge supermarket brand which sell every item it seems but they also do opticians as well within some of there stores.
My store has recently had this within the last 6 months situated at the back of the checkouts and I was keen to give them a try as they were offering a free eye test for people with many time slot available actually on the day so who would turn that down, not me.
I noticed a few problems as soon as I was there and the first was the seating area was actually with the public who are packing shopping away your in a noisy area and there is plenty going on in terms of noise and no privacy.
When called upon having my eye test I was left shocked by the quick pace the optician seemed to use on me. I was told to take off my glasses and have the eye check you all want to see but this was far to quick. Within 10 minutes I was out of ther compared to 20 minutes and more at other opiticians.
I had the light in the eyes and the random checks of reading and colour co-ordination but the speed to which the test was done was a shock. Sometimes I never had a chance to reveal my answer because of how fast the optician was reacting.
Once out of the room he claimed my eye sight had become worse yet he had never seen my preivious eye test reports. He never seemed keen to offer me any guidance either afterwards he said to me to choose a pair of glasses.
I had a voucher to get my glasses half price so I thought I would get some sunglasses with the perscription I had got and I sat down and this lady who served me was more then useless. She had no idea how to measure your eyes and how the frames should fit onto a face and it was quite frankly shocking behaviour on her part.
She sent away for the glasses and they took 2 weeks to arrive. When they did arrive they provided the wrong glasses because my frames were purple and yet they sent back this black colour so they had got the entire order wrong.
After a month nearly waiting I could not cancel the order apparently so I needed to keep them when they arrived and the nose guards in the middle of the frames kept coming lose, the actual screws holding the arms together to the frames were always becoming lose as well.
There was no real reason all these problems should exist considering how many frames I have had before with little going wrong so I am shocked how one company has a pair of frames which look good but end up having many problems.
They do free eye tests but they seem pointless and at times they give the free eye test in my view because they want you to feel you have to purchase some frames from them as well.
They have no real offers compared to other opticians and the eye test is below par as well. The staff are unhelpful and completely unaware of ways to which they could assist you.
Even when I was having my eye test I could hear customers outside with there shopping being packed talking and shouting and it was so bad for privacy, people could hear personal details even when I was filling out the order form.
You want an optician to be nice to you and try to assist you and give you the best kind of treatment around and when I took my prescription to another optician I deal with all the time they claimed that Tesco had made it appear my eyes had improved, yet I was told they had got worse.
I would tell people to visit the bigger names and sometimes a company might be good at selling food and electrical products but does not necessarly mean they will succeed in doing eye tests.
