Advantages: everything under one roof
Disadvantages: a scary giant?
Tesco plc is a UK based grocery and general merchandising retail chain. It seems to be practically taking over the world, and even with the recession, is growing in leaps and bounds.
It is currently the third largest global retailer (based on revenue). Only Wal-Mart (behind the ASDA brand) and France's hypermarket Carrefour are out in front. If you are basing it on profit they even overtake Carrefour, coming in second. Impressive.
When founded in 1919, Tesco was selling surplus groceries from a stall in the east-end of London. The brand was born in 1924, and the first store opened in 1929 in Edgware Middlesex. It has grown and grown over the years by taking over and buying out chains such as Hillards and William Low. They have also expanded their range. Starting off selling food and drink, they now offer entertainment such as CD's, DVD's and games, electrical, kitchen, home and bath items, DIY and car, jewellery and watches, sports and leisure, toys and gifts, phones, sound and vision, and PC, photo and gaming. They also have their finger in many pies including garden centres (Dobbies), Banking (joint venture with RBS), and many other ventures worldwide.
Their Clubcard offers the customer a chance to earn loyalty points when they spend with Tesco, which can be redeemend in a number of ways including saving in store, air miles, and holiday, day trip offers etc.
Love it or hate it, Tesco is certainly a giant.
Whether it's a friendly giant or a scary one is up to you.
Summary: love it or hate it, it has a lot to offer
