Advantages: Wide selection, Good discounts on products of the week, Suprisingly good for electrical stuff
Disadvantages: Is there one near you ?
As a single bloke living in a state of blissful single-ness, I'm happily able to do pretty much what I want (unlike the recently married Mr. Andycharger, who I firmly believe to be under the biggest thumb in the world - despite what he says.) This includes all the fun stuff; curry nights without having to worry about stumbling in pissed and reeking of garlic, being able to watch the T.V & videos that I want to watch and not a chick flick with Hugh Grant in it. Unfortuately, this also means that I have to look after myself. I don't mind ironing, I don't mind hoovering. I don't even mind washing up. I DO mind shopping. I hate it in all its incarnations. Not only does it bring out the worst in people, but they usually decide to bring their kids out along for the ride. This makes me unhappy. I want to be in and out - quick and clean. I'm not at my best when having to suffer in an enclosed space with a bunch of wild-eyed mothers with screaming rug monkeys. And don't get me started on old people. How one old women armed only with a trolley can block an aisle with apparent ease is beyond me. Which make me appreciate Tescos all the more. Rather than do what some people do (i.e my mum) and spend a good proportion of my time worrying about whether a better deal could be had down the road in another supermarket or moving between stores because the selection in certain items is better somewhere else, I'm fairly convinced that Tescos are amongst the better supermarkets in terms of both price and selection. I'm not exactly a connessiour of food, but if I say so myself I make mean curries, stir-frys and bolognaises (as well as a range of toast related meals). Therefore, when it comes to stuff like raw chicken (better yet turkey) and vegetables, Tescos has the other stores beat. There are regular discounts on the pre-packaged turkey breasts, stir-fry pieces and whatnot, that if you buy in bulk and stuff in your freezer can save you
a bunch. Things like peppers and onions (which I put in pretty much everything) are also usually regular items on the discounted items. Don't worry though, mouthwash is also good value as well. The other thing is the Tesco's own brand stuff. Normally, I'm a bit wary of own brand things, but Tesco's are up there with the best of them - especially as Tescos has the 'Finest' brand of produce (including raw stuff - meats, eg and the like) but also meals and the like. Case in point - Tesco's brand of 'Dutch' (as if) Export Lager. I defy anyone to tell the difference between this and Carling. And at £1.50 for four cans (versus around £3.75) I'm not complaining. I'd like to point out that far from being incredibly cheap, I bought this stuff just as an experiment This goes for numerous other items in the store - washing powder tablets (36 of them) for the same price as you pay for 18 of Persil tablets of the same quality and washing-up liquid at a similar price difference. In addition to the food, Tesco's has a pretty good reputation when it comes to things like medicine. At the moment, Tescos is offering pretty big discounts on the more common items (paracetemol, TCP etc). My personal favourite are Jelly Baby Multi-vitamins (£1.50 for 30.) If you hate the chalky tablets like I do, these are like sweets! Also, electrical items (especially irons, TVs and videos) are often offered at discounts beyond that whcih you'll find in the High Street stores. The only downside are those f****** adverts, but never mind. Can't have everything.
