Advantages: Very cheap own brand stuff, vast range of food from all over the world
Disadvantages: You need to be located nearby
Much as I'd like to back the underdog in any situation, I think tesco has deserved it's status as a supermarket Giant. I am lucky enough to live within spitting distance of a particularly good sized one - although I have seen bigger - the type you feel you need a day ticket to visit! So why do I like Tesco so much? Well apart from stocking an absolutely vast range of goodies, I've yet to find a supermarket that matches it in quality AND price together. Apparently during the supermarket wars of recent years, it has become commonplace for larger chains to sells some food staples (basics) at below cost price just to get people into the stores rather than their competitors. This is slightly underhand and desperate - but it does work and is very much to our advantage as consumers. Of course it is open to abuse and if you are on a budget and have a disiplined nature, you can stock up to your hearts content and eat for next to no money. Personally, I can't tell the difference between a packet of spaghetti for 12p and one for 49p - so I'll take the 12p thanks. I have also found that Tesco beans actually taste substancially better than Heinz! At 9p, that's also a bit of a result. Plum tomatoes are plum tomatoes - so you choose if you want to pay 9p or 34p for the same amount? Bread has come down in cost over the last 20 years generally - so it won't surprise you that this can be picked up for about 12p too, for a standard sized family loaf. Beans on toast anyone? at around 5p per helping, it gets my vote. Beer works out at 23p for just under a pint, if you can't tell your Fosters from your Grolsh - you won't notice the difference. My local store is pretty well laid out - but most supermarkets follow the same pattern now anyway - Magazines then Fruit and Veg in the entrance - to get your interest and attract the eye in. It se
ems to work. The clothes I can take or leave, but there are bargains to be had for most. End of aisle mark downs can be a real steal (not literally!) if you turn up at the right time. I'm also finding that they have started to compete with cosmetics stores and price match along with the best offers around. Service isn't bad - but that depends on individual stores rather than chains, so I don't see it as that relevant. If you are ever overcharged you get the product free as well as a refund. Always worth checking those markdowns have been put through correctly! So, all in all I'm doing more of my shopping at Tesco as time goes on. Armed with my clubcard, I do eventually get a small bonus back that I might not get elsewhere too, which all helps. If you are well placed to use Tesco, I strongly recommend you check out some of thoseblue, red and white, own label bargains. Don't be a snob, Try them!

- 22/09/01 Bung some sliced oranges in Tesco Value orange juice and u have a deeeelicious morning drink. The bread is a total no go zone for me though, I hate cheap bread cos its like wax in your mouth. I am fussy in some areas but not in others and 9p tomatoes leave more £ for going out and having a good time, can't be bad! :) Nice op too :) |
