Advantages: cheap

Disadvantages: long queues sometimes

The National Trust is an organisation designed to protect beautiful buildings and locations of historical interest. Properties include Stately Homes, Victorian Work Houses, Mills, Abbeys and much more. Fountains Abbey is my particular favourite.

The National Trust is a charity and therefore is reliant on income from membership fees, donations and money left in peoples wills. They protect over 300 houses and lots more woods and forests. I think they do a great job and I think its even better that they are independant of the government.

Membership is reasonable at just under £36 for an adult or just under £60 for 2 adults. Under 5s are free. Membership gets you a quarterly magazine and free entry to all National Trust sites for a year. Many people have this membership from what I've seen.

Over the past 2 years walkers have been offering free entry to National Trust sites which is great. I haven;t taken out membership over the past 2 years because of this but will definately sign up in the future.

The sites run by the National Trust are very well managed and you can tell that lots of work goes into running them. I cannot recommend National Trust properties highly enough, give them a try during the holidays.

Summary: great charitable organisation.
