Advantages: Its chocolate...
Disadvantages: Its slightly expensive.
Im not the biggest fan of chocolate to be honest. I must prefer sweets or candy. There are plenty of manufacturers of chocolate like cadbury or nestle who distribute to most retailers. There are not however many specialist chocolate makers any more who specialise in luxury chocolate. Thorntons has been around nearly 100 years now and offers many stores around the ountry along with some cafes and an online ordering service!
The most important thing here is obviously what the chocolate tastes like. It is quite special. If you took a piece of Throntons and a piece of Cadbury you would be able to tell the difference in quality. Strangely enough however I would expect many to favour cadburys due to the familiarity of the taste. Throntons is very rich and creamy and some may consider it sicly. Too much of it I agree would be ill advised.
There are many different types of chocolate you can get from the store but I would guess the most popular is the Continental selection. This takes flavours from different countries and is like a selection box of small chocolates. You get all the usuals like praline , hazelnut and caramels but also included are chocolates available only to thorntons like the alpini, which is my personal favourite. If this box isn't for you most stores have a counter where you can buy a custom mix of the chocolates you want. This is a great feaure for a shop as if you want only one kind or a mix of say three then you can. Also available are fudges and toffees that are quite popular and simply brilliant. There are toffees with nuts in or fruits and the fudges are all top quality. Certain times of the year call for a different range in products. For example expect plenty of eggs at easter and many christmas themed products. The good thing also is the staff are always more than happy to add a personal message to most things in icing. In my experiance they are all quite skilled at this and it alway looks great.
A few more things to look out for are only available at the larger shops. At the shop near me they always have two chocolate fountains on. Not only is this a great effect but it gives you something to nibble on whilst you shop. You can get marshmallows and strawberrys that you can dunk in the fountain. I find this too sicly myself but its a chocoholics dream. (they offer a shot of chocolate to the adventureous). If you are buying something in the shop and you ask nicely the staff will normally give you a free sample to try in the fountain. Also at the store near me is an icecream section where you can get a small range of delicious ice creams.
The cost often generates mixed views. It is expensive, much more than cadburys. I find you can get some good deals at the seasonal times of the years but at other times its too expensive. A medium sized box with around 20 chocolates may cost £10. This isnt too bad and the presentation of the box does look like its a luxary gift. Ofcorse the chocolate itself is also very good. I think if your a fan of cadbury you should try a small selection of throntorns, you may find you dont actually like it! Alternatively you can try in the shop. A large box with around 80 chocolatesin will cost around £30. Personally this is too expensive and you often find you will not finish the box or some chocolates will be left out. You may be better off asking for your own mix of chocolates and setting your limit at say £5. The staff member weighs the bag adding more chocs until its worth £5.
Overall Its a great luxury chocolate shop with great flavours and some good deals. It is however a bit too rich for some people and I am not sure all fans of chocolate will like it. Get in your local shop and have a try, see what you think! :)
Summary: Yummmmmm

- 03/09/08 I did but the "Special Toffee" isn't the same as the ranges of nut toffee etc available. What about the flavours of the ice cream?? There are also a number of spelling mistakes in this review that need to be addressed as well as Grammatical errors such as:
Cadbury's
Thornton's
Alp ini
Christmas
e xperience
strawberri es
sickly
isn't
Also the "Continental" selection comes in a loose box edition as well as the bars - a fact which doesn't get mentioned in your review. I'm a big fan of Thorntons, so I know that they sell 3 bars for a £1 / £2 in their "Alpini," "Continental," "Coffee," and "Turkish Delight," flavours - as well as have a few others including a delicious lemon mousse flavour that is out of this world. |

- 03/09/08 I find thorntons way overpriced for what it is. I'd expect a 'luxury' chocolate brand to taste much better than it does! |

- 03/09/08 I do mention both ice cream and special toffee...did you read it??? |
