Advantages: Cheap, Lots to choose from.
Disadvantages: They do not have every designer, some are a lot more prevalent than others.
TKMaxx is a really clever and unique concept, and is the only "off-price" retailer in Europe. It has stores throughout the UK, Republic of Ireland and Germany and is owned by the company TJX which operates similar stores like TJMaxx and Marshalls in the United States. Items sold are brand name clothing, footwear, bedding, furniture, beauty products and housewares with up to 60% off the recommended retail price. The first TKMaxx opened in Bristol in 1994 and there are now 243 stores across Europe (212 in the UK, 13 in Ireland and 18 in Germany). There are plans to open 3 stores in Poland in the latter part of this year.
Basically TKMaxx sells designer clothing at a bargain price, that is what it is best known for. If I want a pair of Tommy Hilfiger jeans, a DKNY T shirt, some Calvin Klein product or a nice pair of Italian made shoes I can look through the rails at TKMaxx and find one for perhaps £20/£30 which is much better than the normal pricetag which might be well over £100. The store is arranged into mens and womens, with one being on either side and then homewares and the various other items being around the edges of the store typically. Clothing is hung on rails and is further divided into areas, for example "Sports Tops", "Polo Shirts", "Jeans" etc. On each little hanger is a little circular plastic tag which tells you the size, either S,M,L or the waist measurement, for example 30", 32", 34" etc. The colour of the plastic tag for each different size is different, and this is a really good system because a lot of time is saved looking at labels to discover the size.
The dressing rooms are generally quite pleasant, you are given a tag with a number on it to specify the number of items you took in (to prevent theft by people putting on tops underneath their clothes) and are given a direction to go in. When you come out, they will take anything you don't wish to buy off you, so there's no need to go and put it back on the rack. The tills are easy to navigate and pass through, although their is a charge of 4p for a carrier bag, which may or may not be a good thing. I think it's good environmentally but then designer clothes are the kind of thing that really you want a carrier bag for, you want to protect them on the journey home, I think it's essential with these items, rather than luxury.
But yep, the bottom line is I've picked up some great bargains at this store, they're usually hard to miss and have plenty of parking, except city centre locations. I would personally highly recommend TKMaxx.
Summary: Definately worth a look.

- 07/12/09 I have never found clothing with anything more than 10% off in here, I guess that also depends on where you shop. |

- 24/09/09 They are good for ski-gear. One has opened recently near to where I live and it seems pretty popular. The only thing I bought from there was from a suitcase and 2 of the zips broke fairly quickly! |
