Advantages: early learning fun., builds confidence in use of computers, invaluable teaching aid
Disadvantages: can be a bit expensive
VTECH are about the best electronic toy manufacturers I have ever come across. We bought our first one in the form of a talking dinosaur called Dinosorter. He taught colour, chapes, numbers and played a few fun games. He was robust and has lasted through 4 young kids. We have bought several of their mini-computers. All of our kids have one in the various age groups. Not only are they fun, but they definately help learning skills. The ones we have all have maths, spelling, music, quizzes and games on them. They can be expensive, but I think they are worth it. My second daughter struggled with her reading & spelling for a year or two. Her VTECH computer helped her confidence grow. She regularly quizzed herself in the spelling section, and it was fantastic to see her little face explode with joy when she got them right. Last Christmas, my youngest child's god-father (she is 5) bought her a cute little VTECH laptop, and it goes everywhere with it. She is just learning to read & spell and she gets hours fo fun from it. It is a God send in the car on a long journey. The wee girl who stuggled now has one that resembles our PC. It has a separate tower, monitor, keyboard and mouse. She loves it. I've even caught her daddy hogging it on more than one ocassion!! It was quite expensive at £175, but I feel it was money well spent. It has left her well equipped to deal with a real computer now, and she can even surf the web (closely supervised of course). I'd recommend them to anyone with a young family.
