Advantages: easy to find books required
Disadvantages: can be expensive
I always feel a little common walking into a Waterstones store, although I feel this is what a bookstore should be like. They are quiet, sophisticated, tidy and have a very fresh appearance.
I had to purchase a few book for my mother the other day, I would personally shop online for my books but my mum wanted them that day. I took my list in expecting to be looking for a few hours but it was really simple...the reason why? The shop is so well organised with a clear structure. The store is set out over two floors and has a large collection of books. As much as I am impressed with the ease of finding books I have found in the past that Waterstones are one of the most expensive book shops around. They always sell the books at the RRP and occasionally a few will be underpriced, it is for this reason that I will shop online as I get a much better value for my money online.
I spent about 30 minutes in the shop and had all the books I required, I decided to search for myself. The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful. The book I wanted was not in stock by they offered to order it in and I though this as very good of them. I decided not to order it and purchase it online, it was about £5 cheaper on Amazon so for me this is a reason to shop online. My mum however got her books and was very happy.
Waterstones do a point's scheme with a reward card, my mum lent me hers and she has managed to accrue several points, which can be good if you rely on books for university and do not like shopping online or cannot wait for a book to be delivered. Overall I was impressed with my visit but am a bit of a cheapskate when it comes to books so wouldn't personally chose to shop there.
Summary: A good book shop with helpful staff.

- 14/11/08 They are rather middle class...I wish they had coffee areas in the Northampton store. |

- 14/11/08 Waterstones is an expensive bookshop - this annoys me because, as they are in just about every high street/shopping arcade in the country, they are able to buy in bulk, just as supermarket chains do - but they don't pass on their savings to the customer as supermarkets do. Granted, Waterstones range is greater, but that just means their economies of scale are greater too... |
