Advantages: Fantastic Selection
Disadvantages: R.R.P. for everything
When you see a title like "I Hate Waterstones" but a 4 star rating, you may think I've lost it - completely bonkers! Well...probably, but that's beside the point. The reason I hate Waterstones is that every time I go in I end up buying something I never intended to buy. They have the most humungous selection to be found at any high-street book store. In fact, if you pop into a branch near a university campus, you'll probably find a lot of books that Amazon can't get hold of any more. And it's just not fair. I'm something of a book addict. Particularly academic textbooks. If I see something that looks interesting I can't help myself - which is why I'm currently reading "An Introduction to the Psychology of Hearing" which I just happened to spot in the Southampton branch, concurrently with Asimov's "End of Eternity," forced on me by the Macclesfield branch. And that's the whole reason they're brilliant. They're not cheap. They don't play fantastic music while you shop. But they have everything short of very specialised academic books - and even some of them. If you have a debit card, and like to read, then don't go in. Resist!! You can do it!

- 25/05/01 I agree that waterstones has a huge selection, especially in their larger stores. When I went in there just to get a Discworld book signed I ended up buying about 4 other books as well, they just have too many things :) |

- 02/11/00 For a large, but CHEAP selection of the sort of books you obviously like Pingu get a copy of Postscript ('Quality Books At Reduced Prices') - you will either save yourself some money, or buy so much you spend even more! Their phone number is 0208 767 7421 - handily available as it's sitting on my desk at work ready for me to place an order at lunchtime! Try them - really, they're good. |
