Advantages: Good choice of products, great prices, excellent sales
Disadvantages: Sometimes goods are not priced and you have to get them scanned at the till
I suppose Woolworth's is considered old-fashioned these days but it's still a store I like. I have two in villages nearby. One is very old and run down and looks permanently on the verge of closing down completely but the staff are lovely and I can always find some real bargains, even if I have to rummage about.
A brand new branch of Woolworth's has opened in another village just a few miles away from me. I had some High Street vouchers to spend so I decided to save them to spend in the new store. I made the mistake of visiting it on the day it opened and you would have thought it was the very first Woolworth's ever to open in the UK. It was packed out with huge queues at the till. This was at the end of October and I haven't been back yet - for a start, the shopping baskets drove me mad. I can see how the idea came about but they are so impractical. They have the usual handle for putting over your arm, but they also have another one that can be stood up at right angles to the basket so that you can glide it along on its wheels. Either way would be dangerous because the aisles are so narrow. Carrying the basket, the extra handle sits at the side of the basket with the actual hand grip sticking right out at school-child level. I dont think it will be long before the management decide to dispense with them and get 'proper' ones again.
Back, then, to my old warm, comfy familiar Woolworth's, which still has all the pick&mix selections, the toys - with plenty of sale and buy-two-get-one-free offers, the household goods (one of the few places where you can get things like Dylon dyes and other not commonly-used items) and the excellent children's clothes. I bought my granddaugther a beautiful party dress there earlier this year. The original price was £26 but, at the till, I was charged £12. I queried this to be told that it was, indeed, £12, so a great bargain.
Woolworth's also sells gardening bits and pieces, stationery, their own-brand chocolates (excellent value for money), items for special occasions such as, recently, Halloween, most of the JML products and CDs and DVDs.
One of the best things about Woolworth's is that their sales are good and the reduced prices are always reduced by a decent amount.
I hope my tired old branch never closes down.
Summary: Not quite as good as they were in the old days, but almost
