Advantages: A childhood paradise

Disadvantages: none it's woolies

My thrupence earned from doing various chores for friends neighbours and family, knew not it's destination as it entered it resting place on my palm. I however was never in doubt as to where this fortune would be spent; there was a place of intrigue and wonder, a place where everyone went to get those special gifts for Mum and Dad. They had all the newest confections 1p chews that lasted an eternity and were half the size of my palm.

From my first outings to the shops all those years ago, and the fondest memories of a welcoming and comforting place, it is with a tear in my eye I say farewell to an old friend. The place for all those school necessities like rubbers and jotters. The place where I purchased my first vinyl record, and indeed my first CD. The place that had things you couldn't get anywhere else and at a reasonable price. The place where your penny got you a great buy and filled your childish heart with glee.

It was never a chore to visit this emporium of wonder, there was always something new, something amazing, and something that would inevitably steal the heart from any child. The vast array of toys and sweets beguiled, if you were fortunate enough to have earned more than thrupence you were in heaven, you could be there all day trying to decide on how to spend such a fortune.

Through the years many things have changed, and some things have disappeared altogether, as does it now appear will this cornerstone of British life. This well beloved, and haloed abode where we all shared so many dreams. Nothing lasts forever so it would appear and the large red letters that have become so familiar and commonplace will crumble and fall as have some other of our greatest institutions. The founder of Pick and Mix has succumbed to the Credit Crunch and many hearts will remember with fondness their exploits within its enchanted walls. Farewell old friend farewell Woolies.

Summary: Will be sadly missed
