Advantages: a piece of history, useful
Disadvantages: not current and can be more expensive than a supermarket
When I heard about Woolworths demise the other day I was not surprised. I have just popped in to Woolies today to buy some spare light bulbs for our Christmas decorations and was shocked to see the store so busy. I admit I popped in to see if there were any amazing sales and I am guessing everyone else did the same.
I have always shopped in Woolies for CD's, Games, DVD's, Stationary, Sweets, drinks and Christmas gifts. Woolworths used to be the place where you could get cheap CD's and DVD's however at £13 for a CD album and £15 for a DVD Woolworths are no longer cheap. Last year I popped in to see if I could get any cheap sticking fillers - Woolies always used to the ideal place for this but I was shocked to see the cheap and poor quality items sell for the same amount as stuff in Poundland.
The rise of Tesco, ADSA and places such as Poundland has led to places like Woolworths becoming deserted. People tend to save vouchers and coupons and shop in supermarkets. Since places like Tesco have started selling CDs and DVDs I prefer to buy everything under one roof. The internet is also a huge killer of places like Woolworths, in fact Play.com and Amazon are so affordable and sell a variety of items Woolworths are rather useless in today's society.
I do however enjoy shopping in Woolworths and will miss seeing it, I won't miss shopping there. My visit this morning was OK but it wasn't pleasant the aisles are so small and the staff are rude. I did purchase a few bargains but nothing amazing. I do feel sorry for the staff but Woolworths have been in debt for a while and I am not convinced it's due to the current market but rather a sign of the times where people can buy everything under one roof or from the internet without even leaving their homes.
Summary: Woolies have gone into administration, but will we care when it goes?
