As you will all know by now Woolworths is nearing its end, I have read quite a lot of reviews on this subject over the last few days and I think it will be a very sad loss.
Woolworths sold lots of different items like sweets, cds, dvds, kitchen ware, toys etc etc. The shop near me ( Peterborough) is a very large one that had two floors and was always brimming with products.
On friday they started their 50% sale, they did this to try and recoup some of their losses, I could not make it into town on friday but was in town today to try and get my daughter some new school shoes, and so decided to pop in to see if there were any bargains left to be had.
I was very shocked at what I saw, the only way I can describe it is that it looked like a huge car boot sale. Some shelves were empty and the others were all just a mess. There were rails of clothes all a mishmash of sizes and objects, this was mainly due to ther being hardly any staff to cope with it all, I counted 9 members of staff and they were mainly serving on the tills, so no one left to sort the merchandise out.
The sale did say 50% but I was shocked yet again to actually hear customers complaining that it was only a 20% sale and that they had not been honest about the sale.
I bought my daughter a top to wear on boxing day and some childrens nail varnish as she so wanted big girls make up from father christmas which cost me £9.49, as I was at the till my attention went onto a lttle key ring on display, it was of the woollies mascot, the little sheep used in the adverts to promote their worth it range, and I felt as though I was a scavenger picking at the left overs. I then couldn't look at anything else and left.
I worked as a shop assistant for my father in laws business, he ran a sub post office and at times things were hard financially. I thought about my families business as I was looking round woollies and what it must be like to have to sell off everything just to get a little extra cash intake, I then began to feel sorry for them, even though I was doing them a favour and giving them a little extra much needed money. They didn't even have any carrier bags to put my purchase in, but luckily I always carry my "green" bag so I sorted myself out.
I really feel for the staff what with it being so near to christmas, it is not nice to lose your jobs at all, but even more so near the christmas period.
I think it is extremely sad to see this childhood chain of stores dissapear, I for one will miss it, I used to get lots of my gifts and school uniform from woolworths, if a big store like woollies can go it makes me wonder what will happen next. I hear on the news that MFI have gone into administration too, and they will be soon starting their own sale too.
Also Royal worcester has gone into administration too!!
Just hope these sales dont affect other retailers too much, as the same thing could happen to them.
Truly shocking.
Very sad :(
Thankyou for reading.
Summary: a sad loss
