Advantages: cheap, sells nearly everything
Disadvantages: slow service
Woolies is a very well known shop. A town without a Woolworths is like a remote without a television…… There are several different departments in Woolworths: Sweets/Confectionary; Big part of Woolworths, always situated at the front of the store so you can just nip in and get a can of drink (if there are no queues). They have a wide range of sweets, boxes of chocolates which grows round about Easter and Christmas time. The Pick ‘N’ Mix is also here where kids shove their dirty greasy hands in amongst the sweets before someone else picks them up to buy and eat. Entertainment: Big range of music and films (videos and dvd’s). Woolworths have their own music and film charts so they don’t coincide with what you hear on Radio One on Sunday nights! It’s all about the same though. This department also contains mobile phones and more recently video and dvd players and televisions. Toys: Where not to go for a peaceful shop. Always full with kids running around dragging everything out on the floor. This department at the end of the day is never a pretty site. Obviously you do get well behaved kids, just not in our area. The toy department is sectioned into girls/boys/baby/boardgames/outdoor so you can find what you are looking for quickly and get the hell out. Clothes: Mostly kids but I have started to see some adults clothes in some stores. Look out for the sales in kids clothes where they reduce things quiet a bit – some thing end up only £1 each! You have to get in there quick for the bargains though! Big range of schoolwear in the holidays and very reasonable prices. Shoes here too, go up to quite a big size for kids (5 or 6) so if you are an adult with smaller feet you can get shoes here (not the bright pink Barbie ones though please!). They will be cheaper because kids clothes doesn’t have VAT added on! I unfortunately have huge feet.
r>Home Everything you can think of for you home. The Kitchen department has some good stuff but it sells fast and then you can never finish off your collection. You’ll buy five mugs because they only have five in stock then will never be able to get any more because they finish the line and don’t get any more in. Towels, don’t ever buy these full price because they always have offers on them, same goes for suitcases. Hosiery All of your tights (every different colour you can imagine), socks and underwear, both men’s and women’s. Don’t expect to get any nice lacy stuff. It’s all sensible pants!! DIY Glue, hooks, plugs etc etc. I know nothing about this section, if something is broken I either buy a new one or pay someone else to fix it. Café Not all Woolies have a café, we are privileged enough in our local Woolworths to have the only café in Cornwall. The breakfasts are worth going in for, bargain!!! You can get a good big breakfast and choose which bits you want for £2. Don ‘t buy your drink in the café, buy it at the front of the store before getting to the café and don’t let them see you drink it!! Works out lots cheaper then! Departments are also added according to the time of year. In the summer we get a gardening department which sells not only tools and plants but furniture as well. Half way through the summer the furniture will be reduced, get it quick then because it will sell out fast! When gardening is taken away Christmas is here and the space is filled with decorations, trees, cards and gifts. Generally, everything in Woolworths is very reasonably priced. They have different offers on every week to save you even more money. Refunds are given without question if you keep your receipt and don’t bring something back ten years after you bought it. If you lose your receipt they may not give you a refund b
ut if they know you bought it at a Woolworths store (and are not bringing it back from somewhere else) or if the item is faulty they will exchange it or give you gift vouchers. One point to remember about the gift vouchers now is that Woolworths is no longer owned by the Kingfisher Group so you can only use your vouchers in Woolworths and not Superdrug/B&Q etc any more. The staff vary. Most of the staff are seasonal and are trained quickly and therefore don’t really know what they are doing. Service can be slow and queues long, especially at peak times like Xmas/January Sales/Easter. You do occasionally get the odd good staff member but they don’t tend to put them on the till! Shelves are kept reasonably full, if they have stock it’s usually out on the shelf. If the shelf is empty it means they probably don’t have any left. Woolworths is a store that sells everything you basically need. You can just go to this one shop and get most of what you need. You do get rubbish as well as good quality goods but it’s cheap rubbish and does the job!!

- 27/07/02 Good comprehensive op, I especially like the new jelly beans you can buy in Woolies, very expensive (£1.65 for 100g I think) but very yummy. Kids clothes are very good too, last forever. |
