Works, theNewest Review: ... of books are really nice and very good value - they range from children's sets to Shakespeare - so a good choice it's a great place to buy gifts as often the prices are well below the rrp. i've found that their shops do vary - for example in Nottingham there were 3 the works (yes 3 but I think one has now closed) and they were all slightly different so it is worth checking more than 1 store if you've already bought something but need another - I once bought some lovely gift bags but they'd sold out at 1 store but had them at another - sounds a lot of hassle but it was well worth it to save so much money. They have really good sales sometim... more |

the works is great for me as I make handmade cards and I'm always on the look out for new ideas. They are very reasonably priced here and a have a great variety of greetings cards (sometimes on offer at 5 for £1 and super quality) , books and gift wrap and their boxed sets of books are really nice and very good value - they range from children's sets to Shakespeare - so a good choice it's a great place to buy gifts as often the prices are well below the rrp. i've found that their shops do vary - for example in Nottingham there were 3 the works (yes 3 but I think one has now closed) and they were all slightly different so it is worth checking more than 1 store ... The Works is a very nice, cheap and with great variety of books shop. I have been in several around Britain. I liked the one in Newport S. Wales but I?m shopping mainly from the one in Preston or the one in Chorley, Lancashire. The layout and the presentation of the shops are almost the same wherever I have been. They differ only in size and quantity. Why To Go There. You can go there if you want buy books really cheap. That?s a great reason to visit a shop isn?t it? What Books You Can Find Children Books The children section is usually the first near the door for obvious reasons. The book that I noticed from that section was ... Read the complete review

Student life requires budgeting, which often involves purchasing daily essentials in cheap pound shops or from chains like Morisons, Wilkinsons and the like. Unfortunately Oxford does not have many of these, The Works is about the only cheap shop there is ? though there are two or three of these (on in the Westgate Centre next to Sainsburys, one on Cornmarket Street and maybe one on the High Street). I don?t know how many branches there are nation wide; but I know there?s also a branch in Colchester, which is much the same. What do they sell? The Works is primarily a cheap book shop, but also sells stationery, art equipment and other bits and pieces ... Read the complete review

Once you accept the Works for what it is you can wander in and pick up the odd bargain. Basically books that end up in the Works haven't, in all honesty, worked. This is the bargain bucket of book shops - the place where books the public didn't buy like the publishers thought they would end up. Sometimes that means you see a big pile of books no-one should ever want to read. But at other times you see some really good value items. Novels that got good reviews but which no-one bought, or books by authors the public has never enjoyed but which are still bette than average. Perhaps best of all this is a great place to find books ... Read the complete review

The Works is a 'Bargain Bookshop'. For what it does, and what it sets out to do, it works very well. It doen't sell any of the new books, and for students wanting textbooks its out of the question. But, if you just want a book on a particualr subject, but with no preference as what book you actually want, then the Works offers great value. It can be a little hard to actual find the books you are after. The books are categorised into related topics within the store, but at first site it does look a little muddled, and you could spend some time finding the section you want. In general, the stores aren't that large, but ar by no means small. ... Read the complete review
