Advantages: Interesting clothes

Disadvantages: May scare lads

I discovered zara because I made some flip flops out of leaves. The flip flops in question didn't last very long, so I gave them to my mother as a birthday present. At the same time I was looking for some simple flip flops for myself in which I could savour this glorious (hem hem) summer weather, and my mother told me she had seen some flip flops a little bit like leaves in Zara.

I'd thought that Zara was for women only, so I encountered a brief moment of surprise before setting out to investigate. Sure enough, there was a men's section at my local Bromley store, and was für ein interessantes menswear section es war. I spent some time in there in a state of delight, skipping from rack to rack and frolicking among the shoes.

The great thing about Zara menswear, is that it is almost womenswear. This means that the designs and materials are far more adventurous than your average men's clothing. I don?t know why it is, and perhaps this is the suppressed transvestite in me, but I don't think I am wrong in opining that women?s clothing is far more fun in general -- not because I like dressing up in skirts and suspenders, but just because designers tend to put more thought into women's clothes (styles and materials) -- while men are left with samey, unadventurous, cloned clothing from store to store. There are a few items in Zara menswear that I would never wear, because they are basically girls' clothes, but I saw, for example, some awesome shoes made of interestingly textured suede, the lightest summer shirt ever, another one made out of seersucker and cotton, some groovy scruffy-looking coats...etc. If you are confident enough in your own sartorial judgement to be able to judge what will look good on you, and confident enough in your own masculinity not to need to resort to boring laddish clothes, then there should be no problem for you shopping here.

I bought the light shirt, and walked away happy. But I
was rather disconcerted to see it register on the till as 'blouse'. Perhaps I missed something after all.
