Vinegar - a chip's best friend!
Member Name: CarolineMB
Advantages: Lasts so long and is very cheap
Disadvantages: Put too much on your food and you'll know about it!
Who doesn't love a bit of vinegar on their chips? And what better vinegar to use than Sarson's Malt Vinegar. It has been an established name in vinegar since 1794 when they first started brewing it and it is still a very reputable name in vinegars.
Most people would probably recognise the bottle that it comes in. It is a glass bottle and is much wider at the bottom than it is at the top, kind of like a teardrop shape. The label around the bottle is a brick red colour and the top is also the same brick red colour. It is a flip top lid and is easy to open and close.
If you open the lid and smell the top of the bottle the smell is so powerful it makes me turn my head away sharply. I find the smell can almost make my eyes water if I'm too close to it! It is hard to describe the smell of vinegar but it is incredibly sharp and has a high acidity to it but is still quite sweet smelling at the same time.
You only need a few drops of vinegar on your chips in order to give them that delicious lift that they need (along with salt though I have to admit!). The sour notes of the vinegar are only just compensated by the sweet side of it, but put too much on and it will ruin the taste of anything. We also always add it to tuna mayonnaise, if you've not yet tried it you should as it makes it so much better. A lot of sandwich shops will add vinegar to their tuna mayo mix.
People also use vinegar as a cleaning agent, maybe on their windows or glass surfaces. I think this became more popular after the hit TV show 'How Clean is Your House?'. They used vinegar a lot and people started to copy them.
A 250ml bottle of this vinegar costs 69p from Tescos - an absolute bargain. It's also available from other supermarkets as well. This bottle of vinegar will last a long time too!
Summary: Great tasting vinegar that lasts ages and is very reasonably priced.
