Advantages: Useful forums, helpful FAQs
Disadvantages: Not updated that regularly
As one of the first DVD players to be released in the UK, the Samsung 709 has attracted somewhat of a cult following. Despite a few glitches with early models, the 709's ability to play American Region 1 discs with the aid of a simple remote control hack means it has been one of the most successful budget players on the UK market. 709online is a website devoted to Samsungs DVD players, obviously concentrating on the 709, but also including the 511, which has superseded the 709. The website is an ivaluable resource for owners of Samsung players, with a wealth of information on known problems with the hardware, and a comprehensive round up of known problem discs. As you would expect, the website also features articles explaining how to hack your player to make it multi-region compatible. Links to FAQs will be of particular interest to new owners. The 709online FAQ is very thorough, covering most things you would ever want to know (and probably some you would not!) about the player. This covers all aspects of the 709, and is a recommended starting place for DVD beginners. It was certainly useful when I was considering buying a 709. A collection of forums provides you with the chance to ask other owners if you have any problems. These forums are mostly related to the 709, but there is also one for wider discussion of DVD issues. As the 709 is no longer in production, it is to be hoped that the site does not fade away. With such a large and devoted user base, hopefully this resource will continue for a good while yet.
