The best thing about Amazon is it's predictability. Amazon.co.uk listings tell you exactly when the item is likely to be in stock if it isn't already so the user can guage a really accurate idea of when they will recieve their item. The number of units in the warehouse for each item is programmed as they recieve items from their suppliers, so as items are bought the number automatically reduces and the item is marked as "out of stock" automatically when there are none remaining. This prevents delays and stress experienced when items are out of stock and the buyer then has to chase the company looking for a refund, or misses out when a birthday or other gift-giving occasion means there is no time for replacements to be sent when the first order deadline fails.
You can pretty much buy anything from Amazon and delivery is always reasonable, there is even a free delivery option on most items which only takes a couple of days.
Amazon can also be used for services like DVD rental, where the DVDs arrive at your door, you watch them and you post them back - it's fantastic!
Finally, It's worth giving a mention to amazon market place, where anyone including you or I can list their items for sale, with payments being processed by Amazon. This means there is a wide range of products at more competitive prices for the buyer.
