Advantages: Wonderful customer service
Disadvantages: None
Amazon.co.uk stocks a huge range from books and DVDs to electrical equipment to games and lots of other things you might not think they would stock. Their prices are usually very competitive, and often a search on a comparison site will show they are the cheapest source available for a particular item. However it is worth considering buying from Amazon even if they are not the very cheapest source.
We have found their returns policy to be excellent. Unlike some online retailers they will pay return postage if you have to return anything that is faulty. When we had a faulty video player they paid for returned postage and refunded us the purchase price. On another occasion we purchased some software from Amazon marketplace which turned out to be a copy. When we complained Amazon instantly refunded the full price. When we purchased a memory stick from a third party via Amazon that turned out to be faulty the seller didn't respond to any of our communication. When we bought this problem to Amazon's attention they refunded us the money.
Amazon are a huge company that are the first port of call for many people when they want to purchase online. However, unlike some online companies and auction sites, they understand the importance of good customer service. For example, that it makes good business sense to sort problems out quickly and efficiently, and refund and keep people happy, rather than ignore them, or make them fight for justice when they have a problem.
Incidentally most of our transactions with Amazon have been hassle free, but I wanted to highlight how when we have had a problem they have dealt with it in an exemplary way.
Summary: Understand the importance of efficient customer service
