Advantages: Your PRIME advantage is to not pay for this membership
Disadvantages: No reminder that this payment will be taken
I try to bring to my reviews an angle maybe not considered, so this review will not consider the vast array of products on Amazon etc. It purely covers Amazon Prime.
My partner and I are both registered with Amazon. He qualified for a months free trial of Amazon Prime which consists of free next day delivery. We received an email at the start of the month to notify us of this.
This was brill as I needed a book for Uni and we also got some childrens headphones via this way delivered for free and next day - exactly what it said on the tin.
Roll forward 6 weeks and in reviewing the credit card statement there was an Amazon item for £47.97 on there, we trawled back through the emails and it wasn't any of our purchases, thinking it might be a rogue purchase I googled the title Amazon Prime and came up with an example of exactly the same case. You may have guessed what happened basically if you want to continue after your free trial of Amazon Prime do nothing and your membership will automatically continue and the payment of £47.97 will be charged for the next years membership.
There was no email to remind us when the months trial was over. You would have to be a substantial Amazon customer to pay £47.97 and benefit from free delivery - even at Amazon delivery rates, this would over 10 purchases on arrange to equalise on this.
Luckily we were able to cancel this membership by going to your account and click on Prime Settings. This brings up the account and there is a cancellation button there - a message will appear notifying you if you will get a refund - and this is the crucial bit - if since paying the £47.97 you have used the free delivery service - you WILL NOT be refunded this money. We were lucky.
I think this happened so easily that it worthy of spreading the word.
Nothwithstanding the above, Amazon has been a great site to use however this experience has left us feeling more wary of them for future use.
Summary: Go for the free month put it on a calendar and remeber to cancel after then

- 09/11/09 I don't get what you're trying to say.
I signed up for the free trial. Amazon made it completely clear that after 30 days I would have be charged for this if I didn't cancel it through my account details. Set myself a reminder in my calendar twenty-eight days later. Job done.
You've even pointed out that where you forget to cancel, as long as you haven't used the service you get a full refund.
A lot of consumers need to get a grip and start to take accountability for their own actions. Why should Amazon remind you that you need to cancel?? |
