Advantages: Free to list items, can find rare, out of print books

Disadvantages: Closing fees can be expensive, untrustworthy sellers

I have used Amazon Marketplace as a means to both buy and sell books. Selling books on Amazon Marketplace is far more efficient than Ebay and you are likely to receive the value of the book. While the closing fees are expensive, there are no listing fees. Simply fill in the details of the book you want to sell, choose your price and the Amazon Marketplace fees should you sell the book will automatically be calculated. Many times I have used Amazon Marketplace to sell old University text books that I needed to get rid of. Since there are fees associated with Marketplace and the cost of sending the book, I would recommend first trying to sell books offline. If that doesn't work then register on Marketplace.

I have also used Marketplace as a means to buy books also since often Marketplace is cheaper than the Amazon price itself. However, while some orders have gone through smoothly I have experienced some frustration with some volume sellers that simply list bulk volumes on books they don't even have making you wait over a month and failing to reply to emails. However, Marketplace has been most useful for finding rare out of print books. Last year I managed to track down a rare book from Amazon market place in Japan and have the book shipped to me at a reasonable price. I was very satisfied with that particular transaction.

Overall the closest I can compare Amazon Marketplace to is Ebay. Amazon Marketplace is not perfect however it is better than Ebay.
