Advantages: Saves money, saves your back

Disadvantages: Have to pay for delivery

I've been doing my shopping online for a while as due to my health problems, pushing a trolley around the supermarket is hard going. Until recently the only choice around here was Tesco, but in the past year Asda have set up business in online shopping.

The Website

The website has just undergone a revamp, not that it was particularly difficult to use before, just a little slow. Now things have speeded up dramatically and the various items are much easier to find. You care able to break down the categories much more than with Tesco Online; for example if you are looking for cereal you can choose to break it down by, cereal type, cereal brand or children's cereal, etc. This means you aren't faced with pages and pages of products. The only downside here is that Asda don't have all their products online yet, and many of the Smartprice items are missing.

Booking delivery times is also simple, you can select up to 3 weeks in advance, and choose 2 hour time slots between 10am and 10pm ( the site also shows earlier time slots, so it maybe that in other areas the deliveries begin earlier in the day). Some time slots have a van symbol next to them, this means someone else in your area has book that slot as well, and by choosing the same spot you are helping to lower emissions (or save Asda petrol money, depending how cynical you are).

Payment is made by card over their secure server.

My experience

Since I've been using the Asda website I've never had a bad experience with their delivery service. They were 20 minutes late once, however because of the delay they refunded the delivery fee, and to be honest it wasn't really their fault, it was during the horrendous weather and the driver had got stuck in the lakes until the roads cleared.

One of the really good things about the Asda service over the Tesco one is the substitutions. With the Tesco delivery service, if they substitute you pay the price of the substitute product, which in my case is normally dearer because I buy the cheapest of everything. With the Asda service they only charge you the price of the original product, for instance I ordered a small tin of pineapple rings, but they only had large tins. So I received the large tin for the price of the small. If you're not happy about the substitutions they'll take them back for you.

The drivers have always been really friendly and efficient, making sure they park sensibly instead of taking up the whole road and getting me into my neighbours' bad books.

I can't fault the Asda service and would recommend it to anyone.

(You can also look on certain websites for vouchers to cover delivery costs)

Summary: Well recommended

Good review. I've been tempted to try online shopping until I read the "What's your starngest substitute" thread on MSE. I can't really be doing with getting 24 cans of dog food in substitute for 24 pouches of catfood lol.
