Birstall, in West Yorkshire, is a small town which is the birthplace of Joseph Priestley, discoverer of oxygen. His statue stands in the cobbled market square, overlooking a small selection of shops. The town of Birstall is situated off the A62 between Leeds and Huddersfield. At the motorway M62 Junction 27 there is a retail park with a variety of large retail outlets.
