Advantages: Cheap, Quite fast, Cheap

Disadvantages: No classical/jazz, No older stuff, Less flashy

I first discovered CD-Wow (No, it’s not a mistake, this one is much better than CD-Now), according to the original date of this op on it, all the way back on the 9th May 2001. Oh happy day. And, being the upstanding and respectable DooYoo citizen I was, and still am, decided to inform you all about it too.

The highest price for a single CD on this site is £8.99, and this paltry sum – which is not increased by the delivery, as this is free – is what you can expect to pay for just about any popular-vaguely-recently-released CD in the top 75 of the charts. There is also a ‘bargain basement’ page with even cheaper CDs, and it is not just Country & Western, Easy Listening, Teeny Pop, etc. there’s some vaguely good stuff there too. As I am writing this there is a 3CD Elvis Presley compilation thing (bargain-fodder) and a couple of golden-age Oasis albums for £6.99 each, to name but a few in a range which encompasses Spice Girls and Marilyn Manson.

It is reasonably fast, too. I ordered Gomez’s “Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline” and Ash’s “Free All Angels” (each for…wait for it…£8.99) on the Friday I discovered the site and they arrived on Tuesday. They came in neat figure-hugging little boxes too (“Postage Paid, Hong Kong”) so it is better for the environment than my previous preferred retailer, Amazon.

A more recent example, to show that they are still on top form, I just ordered 'The Beatles 1967-1970' (their grooviest period, in my opinion, being '66-69) which is a double CD and so cost me £18. I ordered it on Sunday and it came today (wednesday), though the site says to wait 5-7 days for delivery. Smooth.

There is also a pre-release section, where you can order forthcoming alums in advance, and where I have just spotted a new Gomez album called ‘In Our Gun’ due to come out on the 1
8th March, which makes me happy.

They have recently added a DVD section, where the standard price seems to be £14.99 (You thought that would be £8.99 too? Don’t push your luck, mate) and delivery is still free.

There are, of course, some pretty big limitations. Firstly, you stand little chance of getting anything very old there, unless it pops up in the bargain basement, and by saying ‘old’ I demonstrate my membership of an impatient consumerist society, as I really mean anything not in the top 75 any more.

Secondly there’s no jazz or classical sections. Nuff’ said.

Thirdly, it is not as flashy as the more expensive sites. It doesn’t have reviews from customers (but, of course, you’ll want to come to Dooyoo for those), audio clips of tracks or flashy recommendation systems. If you nee help choosing something, I’d recommend you play with Amazon or summit for a bit. Once you know what you want, however, make straight for CD-Wow and don’t beat about the bush, y’nowaddimean? This could be the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
