Advantages: Price match, low prices to start with.
Disadvantages: Salesmen, warranties and BAD customer service.
Hi there, I'm Seventeen years old and just finished a temporary Christmas job at Comet. I've been frantically saving up for a car since around June 99' and after handing in my CV (what little of it there was!!!) I had a call from Comet to attend an interview. I got to the store with 5 or 10 minutes to spare so as to impress my future employers, when I got there I was told that he was on his dinner. After patiently waiting for about half an hour the manager walked in and came over to me, "when can you start?" I was looking forward to my first day and had been interested in Electronics since early childhood. On my arrival I was told to switch on the TV's and starighten up shelves, it seemed to me like I'd got myself a real job (with a shirt and tie and everything). After a short hour or so of 'training' I was set loose on customers on the shop floor, already under pressure to sell, sell, sell. A Quick Fact: ------------- Now let me tell you a little fact about their warranties, as a company, Comet make a large profit on selling warranties and this is why as soon as you show the slightest bit of interest in a product they suggest to you it's going to break down! A Few Tips: ----------- Let me remind you that Comet DOES keep to their 'Low Price Promise', if you shop around it's unlikely that you'll find a product in their shop cheaper anywhere else, but bear in mind that it does happen and if it does you need to make sure you go to Comet purely for the following reason; if you find the product cheaper anywhere else (and it's in stock) then Comet will beat their price by 10% of the difference! If you do come across such a deal then be sure that you check that the item is in stock where you have seen it cheaper and if possible GET IT IN WRITING i.e. pick up a leaflet etc. Another thing you must bear in mind is not exactly a cheat but is worth think
ing about. Many people buy the 5 year warranty cover from Comet. Imagine then that you move house, you would ring the insurance company and inform them of your change of details, but what if you were leaving your fridge (or whatever it may be) at your original house, register the change of address but if you're not taking your fridge ("") with you then you're GUARANTEED not to make a claim and therefore will get your money back for the warranty. Types of warranty: ------------------ One-for-one cover (also known to the not so trained Comet salesman as 'Instant Replacement Cover' or an 'I.R.C.') - the Instant Replacement Cover DOESN'T cover you for any kind of accidental damage or misuse, only for electrical or mechanical failure in the product. If the product is worth over about £80 the 'IRC' is definitely worth the £24.99 for three years cover but otherwise I wouldn't bother. ABC cover - Also known as Accidental Damage Cover (and other various salesmen-made phrases) cover you for almost anything (except wilful damage and misuse) and are actually probably worth taking out, if you are considering taking out a warranty your best bet is the five year warranty with which you get your money back after the five years if you don't claim on it. All the tips aside, I'd like to have a little complain about the way they treat their 'younger staff', me and four other employees started work in October and worked their for the duration of the Christmas holidays, all of us giving our new job 100% and turning up on time (I even worked an extra 5 hours for free on a Saturday) and when it got to January with us all getting comfortable in our jobs our names stopped appearing on the 'hours rota sheet' the four of us carried on about our work for the hours we were down for and then after that our names had gone. Not a word from the manager about finishing, not even a than
kyou for working there, the only people who actually said anything about us leaving were fellow salesmen (with permanent contracts). I am disgusted with the way they have treated us but I now work somewhere else for more money, HA!!!!!!!! Good luck with the salesmen and follow my tips (they'll get you far), hope you find the opinion of some use and I'm glad I could give you an inside view into the way Comet works. Thanks for reading!!!!!!!

Like all jobs, it comes down to the quality of your management. I work for Comet and have done for a year and a half on the admin team and it is the best job I have ever had. Most staff members in our store are coming up to or have received their long service award for 10 years of service, and there's not many places who hold there staff that long these days! I will admit we have a fantastic crew of managers and staff, who are some of the most customer focused people I have ever met, and all this leads to a happy environment in our store, which the customers enjoy. We have many customers who return to us and you get to know their faces. Things do sometimes go wrong but we do try to sort things out ASAP for the customer. Yes it's true we have targets we have to meet, but which national retailer doesn't. We are based next door to a curry's that don't hold a candle to us, they have a nicer store but their staff just couldn't give a dam, so we thrash them. Having also worked for the D.S.G (Dixon's Stores Group) I can say there warranty's are no match for comet's. Comet give full price paid if anything goes wrong and the machine is wrote off, we have deadline times to work to on warranty claims of usually 14 days (for essential items) which the D.S.G don't or never used to when I worked there, and in fact did you know comet only make about 2p in every £1 on an extended warranty after tax? I would say a good 90% of the people who work for comet are happy in their jobs. I am sorry about the experience that you had you must have had a bad store as most of our Christmas temps return year in year out. I find it a good company to work for and see myself there for a long time to come. Glenny |
