Advantages: none
Disadvantages: expensive, useless, very rude and unhelpful staff
I foolishly purchased 5 star extended warranty on a Sony television and video from Comet, costing in excess of £250. I was issued with certificates of insurance for the items. I was told by the 'salesman' that they typically would attend same or next day if the appliances would breakdown. When my VCR broke down, I called Comet to arrange a repair. They insisted that I had only purchased the extended cover on the televison and not the VCR, despite myself having the certificate of insurance and the till receipt. I spoke with the Comet head office and they held the same line and were not prepared to arrange a refund or a repair and as far as they were concerned that was the end of the matter. I wrote to both Comet and the insurance company in July. I have had no reply from the insurance company to date. After 4 weeks, I received a telephone call from Comet, saying that the error was on there part and they would arrange a visit if I called the service centre again. I called the service centre, was on hold for 45 minutes (National Rate 0870 number, so they make money off the call no surprise). When I finally got through, they would not book the call as I did not have the policy number to hand and there was no way for them to find the details. I explained that I had been on the phone for nearly an hour and begged the operator to help, at which point she 'magically' found my details in 10 seconds after I provided my postcode. Despite my product now having been broken for 6 weeks they would only book the service for EIGHT working days later. He did not show up. They also said that the cover on my television has been withdrawn (the cover cost me £160!) in order for my video to be repaired (again, despite having an insurance certificate and a receipt). I have since been calling Comet for the past week to try to rebook the service and the number has been continously en
gaged. I have faxed the service centre each day with no response and also left messages on their out of hours answer machine. I have now sent all the documentation to the Insurance Ombudsman to try to get this resolved. Needless to say, be VERY weary about buying this cover as it is complete rubbish and nothing short of theft.

- 03/09/01 These insurance policies sold by the big electrical retailers have a bit of a reputation as a con and you have confirmed this, ta. |

- 02/09/01 Having 2 days ago declined their offer of £60 insurance on a £130 hi-fi, this article makes me feel very good indeed. Had previously been a victim of a similar, well....scam. Caveat emptor. |

- 02/09/01 I believe that Comet are well-known for using high-pressure selling techniques to sell their own insurance from which they make more money on than selling the goods themselves. |
