Advantages: Quick, reliable, and expert.

Disadvantages: Not for the novice as many parts need technical ability to fit!

The white goods in our house have had many years of use, and my husband sees it as a challenge to keep them going himself, by whatever means he can. He is not an expert, I have to tell you, but he is practically minded, and he rises to the challenge, when things go wrong. No, correct that, he joins white goods forums- yes they exist- and here helpful experts put him on the right trail, and before long we are ordering from his favourite store espares.

ESpares are a company of 50 who are passionate about parts. Since 2003 they have been beavering away in West London, where they have built up a reputable business. They have over 300,000 parts, and can even source some which are more obscure if you ask them. They even state on the website that some of them are ready to talk to you on the phone about spare parts-can't wait! You can even watch some of their You Tube videos on how to do basic repairs www.youtube.com/user/eSparesVideo

Hubby fixing things hasn't always been the case. When we had four little children under 8 he never had time to repair white goods, yet they were always dying due to overuse, and one by one repair men would come and go, and we would part with hundreds for either parts or labour, or for a new appliance when it wasn't cost effective to replace things. "No more" he said "I can do this" and so he has one by one fixed and repaired terminally ill appliances. He takes longer than the experts, and sometimes, well let's just say it causes light hearted friction, as my nerves get shattered just watching the piles of screws, and the open laptop he has on the kitchen work surface, as he follows detailed plans of the insides of these power houses!

Espares is a site which is not attractive to most. What you buy holds no interest really, but the joy of being able to save another white goods item from the tip is enough to keep me from melting into despair when hubby loads it up.

Two weeks ago our dishwasher died. It died three or four years ago too, and that was his first triumph with Espares and the forums, when he was able to track the fault down to the circuit board and was able to fix it. Now with the help from his cyberspace experts on the white goods forum it seemed we were in desperate need of a heating element. I have to say finding this out was a long process (almost a day actually when the dishwasher was in a million pieces on the kitchen floor.) Even my Persians were horrified as they had to squeeze past it to get to their litter trays and food bowls. However now I had confidence whereas before I had doubts His track record for fixing is good, and espares help him achieve a result. He is also in my daughter's good books as she is doing a degree in sustainable development, and so doesn't want to see mountains of white goods condemned to landfill when a part could easily sort them.

The website is simple and you basically locate the part you need by looking up the make and model number. In our case Bosch. The website is really well designed, and it is just a matter of clicking on the make you want, and within a few more clicks the part is in your shopping cart ready to check out. You can order through the cash back sites too-Topcashback is currently the best offering 10% back, so on a part costing £90 like ours it's a good return. They also have a price promise that if you find it cheaper elsewhere they will refund the difference, which we are doing as we have found it cheaper on a rival site.

Parts arrive within a few days and then the hard part begins. You need confidence and patience, and of course a good knowledge of what you are doing as electrics and water are a lethal combination.

In the past we have used them many times and have repaired our tumble dryer, and oven, and due to espares and the skill of my hubby, we haven't bought a new white goods item in over a decade. Calling in a plumber for our faults would not be economically viable, it would be cheaper to scrap the machine.

Payment is easy for the parts, they take all major cards and delivery is quick, and you can track it all the way by logging into your account which you easily set up on the site by entering some basic details. Costs are good too-from £1.99 to a maximum of £8.99, so if you are ordering many spare parts it will never exceed this. They use Royal Mail and DHL and I have never had any problems with the items which arrive in less than 5 working days.

So you never need to feel like a spare part again -only I do when I am banished from the kitchen for a while as to be honest I wouldn't have a clue what to do even if I logged into white good forums. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are really competent with plumbing, DIY etc and probably not a good idea to do it on Valentines Day. However the site also sells replacement items which are easily fitted like hoover bags, and filters for water jugs and so on -it isn't just the things which need technical know how.

In my opinion it's a great site, and what's more it is a pioneer for sustainability, as terminally ill white goods are given a new lease of life-at least in our house anyway.

What a great site! Far too many white goods which can be fixed end up in the tip due to cowboys charging ridiculous prices to replace parts - and sometimes these parts just need a small repair!
