“ Supplying kitchen and office furniture components. „
We had our kitchen fitted around 15 years ago, by a company some of you may have heard of - Space Kitchens. They actually did a pretty good job although I do feel, in retrospect, that we probably paid too much. However, the actual cabinets are very solid and they have been installed just as we had hoped and have, until now, showed no problems.
One of the units is a corner cupboard. The door for this cabinet folds into the corner, hung on one side and with the two halves of the door hinged in the middle. I had noticed that the gap between the two halves seemed to opening up a bit at the top and that one half seemed to be sagging a little. I couldn't actually see much wrong and so didn't do anything about it. Then, one half fell off whilst my wife was opening the door.
On examining the hinges it was clear what had happened: most hinges are made in multiple pieces but usually all are pressed steel; these hinges had one part made in pressed steel and another in cast metal, probably aluminium alloy. The cast section had fractured at the point where it attached to the pressed piece.
So, I needed replacements but I couldn't go back to Space Kitchens, they having gone to the wall years ago. A search on the Web for "corner cabinet centre hinges" produced very little by way of anything that looked even remotely similar or suitable. I found one company of kitchen unit manufacturers which had something that looked as if it might do and order a pair on a "try and return for refund if unsuitable" basis. They were unsuitable: the hinges were too short to fit around the corner in fact, I can't imagine what sort of doors they would fit!
I continued to search and on one occasion it threw up a potential website that had not previously been identified - Eurofit Direct. On examining their catalogue I came across hinges which, whilst not the same as the originals, looked like it would do the job. Not only that but they were cheaper than the ones I had previously tried, a lot cheaper.
The website advertises itself as "The Fitting Solution" and has categories for all of the sorts of parts that you might need for making or repairing furniture. The category that interested me was "Hinges, Stays and Catches." Amongst the two pages of components I spotted a "Concealed Hinge - Screw On - 40° opening - Bi-Fold Corner." The picture showed a hinge that looked as if it would replace the broken ones, with sufficient adjustment to allow for the differences in design.
I ordered two pairs (so I would have spares in case of a future problem) and, at a total of £18.23, including tax, post & packing, it was less than I paid for the previous single pair of hinges! The company accepts payment by credit card with no surcharge and uses Sage Pay to collect payment. The company kept me updated with emails detailing the progress of my order and, within two days, they were delivered to my home.
The hinges fitted although a little bit of modification to one door was required in order to get them to do so. Fortunately the modifications are not visible from outside once the doors are closed. The doors now work as well as they did before although they do open in a slightly different way.
So, full marks to Eurofit Direct for its comprehensive catalogue of parts, its good value and for fast, efficient service. Should I need to do so I would have no hesitation in using them again.
