Half Price Jewellers is a discount jewellery company with stores across the UK as well as a website. I remember when I was younger regularly going to the shop to buy friends birthday presents as they were very reasonably priced compared to other jewellers on the high street such as H Samuels. In Hull, we have two stores. Neither store has a huge amount of stock, especially with some types of jewellery, but what they do have is very well priced. As you would expect, they sell every type of jewellery you can think of, from rings to watches to bracelets, from silver to platinum, and all at discounted prices.

As I have mentioned, we have used HPJ regularly over the years, they are ideal for gifts, or for treating yourself. However recently I have had a couple of experiences that have put me off shopping there again.

For Christmas 2008 I had requested an amethyst ring. My boyfriend found one in HPJ, pointed it out in the window, and asked for it boxed. When he got home he wrapped it straight up so I would not find it. On Christmas day I opened the gift box, and realised the stones were not amethyst at all, they were tanzanite, and the customer assistant had given him the wrong ring. Yes, my boyfriend should have checked, but he's male and does not think like that. We managed to exchange the ring with no problems.

So, now I had my lovely amethyst ring. In January we went off on our holidays to Tenerife. We had just arrived and went for a walk when I realised one of the stones from the ring had fallen out. I had worn the ring once or twice, that was it. On our return to the UK we took the ring back to HPJ and explained what had happened. They inspected the ring, and said it had been hit or smashed, and the catches which keep the gems in place had snapped. This had not happened, I had only worn it for a few hours in total and don't even sleep in jewellery. They did say we could send it off for repair, but this would be at our cost. It was not a really expensive ring, and it would not have been worth it.

At this point I told myself I would avoid them in the future.

This Christmas I was out shopping with my Mum. We went past HPJ and I made a comment about one of the rings in the window. On Christmas morning lo and behold there it was. I tried it on...did not fit!

Back we went to HPJ after Christmas, explained the ring did not fit and could we exchange it for a bigger size. The man serving us inspected the ring, and told us it had been worn. How, I have no idea as it was far too small. Reluctantly, he told us we could exchange it for another ring, but I would not be able to get the same one as they were out of stock. We looked at the other rings and there was not much choice at all, maybe 10 rings in total. We asked if he would be able to order it in for us, and he was able to do this. The whole time he acted like we were in the wrong, and he was doing us a favour.

I will definitely not be using them again. The customer service in my local stores is shocking, and the jewellery is clearly not well made. Yes, the prices may be reasonable, but there are other options such as Warren James and the jewellery department at Argos if you want cheap jewellery. I would rather pay more and get good service, because it just goes to show, you do get what you pay for.

        AVOID AT ALL COSTS

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. HIGH STREET ROBBERY. I presume Half price jewellers are adequate for ready to go 'buy as you see it' purchases, however having paid a deposit and a further payment for a diamond engagement ring to be created in platinum as opposed to the original white gold, there customer service revealed its ugly face. The claws varied in size and shape and looked very shoddy. The assistant advised it could be 'reworked'. Would you accept this for a ring of a lifetime?? They have advised they will be keeping all funds, not just the original deposit. This is both illegal and also robbery. Again AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
