When it comes to shopping online, there are only a few places I have whittled it down to needing to use. Let me share them with you, starting with the best of all:

1) www.play.com
This site sells DVDs, music, gadgets, books, computer equipment and trendy clothes (mostly T Shirts).

The best thing about the site is the prices. Delivery is free for every product, and yet the prices still out-do high-street stores. If you're after any item in the above categories, check Play first. It's often cheaper than ebay even!

I checked my account, and I have bought nearly 100 items in the last 3 years from this site. Every year, we buy all our Christmas presents here, and last month I spent £70 on 15 excellent pressies, ranging from books to DVDs to head massagers.

A little tip - if you click on the international button, it will take you to the US site, where you can buy DVDs that haven't even been released here in the UK and guess what: postage is still free!! International postage from the US and it costs nothing!

Some items on play are just crazy cheap - 99p delivered for the reservoir dogs talking key chain is just one example.

The stunningly low prices are linked to the lack of tax or VAT or whatever that the company needs to pay being based in Jersey, so they beat almost everyone on prices every time.

The delivery takes around 5 days, never before, so you should allow 10 to be absolutely sure. Everything I've ordered has arrived, but a mate of mine didn't get the item, and they re-sent it no questions asked.

Of course, Play also doesn't have high street shop rent to pay, and that's another reason it's so cheap. I just cannot recommend it enough!

2) www.amazon.co.uk
When you want to buy a book (particularly if it's a bit old) you should check amazon. Many sellers sell older books for 1p plus postage, and this is often cheaper than a charity shop (plus you don't have to trawl around to find it).

3) Asda.co.uk
ASDA.co.uk is a website that allows you to 'go shopping' virtually, with your purchases being delivered at the time of your choice. First up, you pick a delivery slot (in 2 hour increments), then you go shopping. On the left of the screen are the categories to browse through, e.g. 'bakery and cakes', then under that come the products you would expect. You simply click the 'add' button on what you want, and it goes into your basket. When you're done, you go to 'checkout', and fill in your payment details, then await delivery.

Our first shop took a couple of hours to do, as it was all new to us, but the beauty of the site is they save your shopping list, so next time you go on you can load it up and just add or take away a few bits and bobs. This way, a shop can take just ten minutes, which is a phenomenal time saving considering in that time you normally wouldn't have even arrived at the shop.

Tuesday and Wednesday are the cheapest days, with delivery at £4, and the rest of the week is around £5. Delivery is always on time (out of around 50 shops we've done none have been late). The delivery guys will bring the food right to your door, but I always go out and help. Your shopping is bagged as you would normally do it yourself.

Sometimes there are items out of stock which you know will be in the real shop (for example cucumber wasn't available last week). Quite why this is I don't know, but it is one of the few downsides of the site.

Over all, it's using the net to its best, saving time, energy and money that you can then put into something else.

Whilst there are lots of other options, I find I only need to use these three sites to buy everything I need online!

Summary: do it!

Very useful review, I didn't know about Play's free international postage. I wonder if Royal Mail will add on a huge customs/holding charge like they did when my fiance bought things from amazon.com!
