Advantages: A lot cheaper, and definately quicker

Disadvantages: less personal service

I have been shopping on line now for many years, and I would certainly urge anyone who hasn't done it to go ahead and give it a go.
Newspapers and magazines are full of so called horror stories about on line shopping, like not getting the right product that was ordered, or not getting anything at all.
I think this could be scare mongering from companies who don't do on line shopping, if you spend some time looking for the things you want on line, I will guarantee they will be cheaper than going into a shop and buying it.
You can take your time and not feel any pressure from pushy sales staff, or feel like a shoplifter as they watch your every move, you can compare prices from hundreds of shops from your computer, something that would take you days to do on foot going from shop to shop, and probably wear your shoes out as well, so you would have the additional expense of buying a new pair.
Many people will say that it is a more personal service visiting a shop, yes it maybe but you are paying more than you have to for the privelage, all I can say is give on line shopping a go, you will save a lot of money, and you'll have just as much fun.

Summary:
