Oxfam is a well known charity who work to combat poverty worldwide, raising funds for development and aid. The charity have an online web shop which I have used on a couple of occasions.
The site sells a wide range of items including second hand clothing for women, men and children that has been donated. They also sell donated DVD's, books and music. They also sell some homeware items and they have a special vintage section on the site which covers a range of items from the pre 1920's to the 1980's. As well as donated items they sell things like Christmas cards, diaries and calendars.
I have a local Oxfam charity shop and the difference in price in store and online is huge. My local shop has clothing for only £1 and upwards whereas the online shop tends to overprice their goods. You can search from a wider selection of clothes though and you can filter the selection down to the clothing brand. I still think the clothing is somewhat overpriced.
If you are after any specific vintage items the site is perfect for this as they sell authentic pieces from past eras. You can also find some unusual and rare pieces among their collection. Items are arranged in terms of what era they are from.
There is always a decent range of Oxfam branded Christmas cards available. There is also a range of attractive diaries and notebooks which are perfect for small gifts or stocking fillers.
Finally there is a section where you can buy a charity related gift for a loved one. These sort of gifts include substantial donations to help plant trees, aid farmers, buy farm animals for provide teaching. There is a wide range of donations available and when you buy one an e-card is sent to the recipient whilst the cash goes directly to the cause.
You can pay by credit or debit card as well as by Paypal and standard UK delivery is £3.95. The checkout process is quick and simple and I've no problems with my orders.
I always think money spent at Oxfam is money well spent. Not just for the fact it goes to a good cause, but there are some real bargains to be had. Oxfam's online shop looks very much like many other online stores, there are easy to browse categories and a simple checkout process.
They sell everthing from
Second hand clothing
Music, films & video games
Stamps & coins
Art & photography
Memorabilia & ephemera
Toys & games
but I think they are special when it comes to their vintage fashion. I never tire of browsing their site.
Looking around your local Oxfam shop can be great fun and people from all walks of life use their shops. You never know what you're going to find. I think the experience of using their online shop is even better because your search can be much more organised - you can either look for specific items or browse through the categories
As with the high street shops, they constantly get new stock in so you never know when your're going to find a little gem!
