pc specialist - vortex 3 laptop
Member Name: erveman
Advantages: price, reliable
Disadvantages: build time
starting from the beginning. I was looking for a hig end laptop at a reasonable price.
after much internet perusing i decided that pc specialists were the way to go.
The reasons for this is that you get to spec pretty much the laptop that you want and need, without paying for the things that you dont. Also, you get a lot for your money than you would paying for a ready built laptop such as alienware or xps series. The laptop that i eventually ordered would have cost many hundreds more from alienware for the same spec.
being a bit clueless when it comes to computers and specs, the forums on the pc specialist site was fairly useful, i was able to ask what kind of system i would require for the work that i was going to be doing, and what i could change to improve my system or save money on things that i didnt require.
speccing and ordering is all fairly straightforward, although they charge extra for using a credit card which is a bit of a bummer. if you need to pay using your credit card i suggest registering it to a google wallet account and pay that way, there is still a surcharge but it is slightly less.
I think the wait for the laptop was around 13-14 working days, which i was happy with. also i noticed in my order notes that my processor had been upgraded for free, i assume that the one that i originally ordered was out of stock or some similar reason, anyway that was a pleasant surprise.
no complaints with the delivery, never had any problems with dpd, was delivered in the time slot specified. packaging was more than adequate.
My only minor gripe with the laptop was that i ordered a SSD drive, which is used to install the operating system and programmes, to make startup quicker etc. However Windows had been installed on the secondary hard drive, which meant i had to re install windows, and format the hard drive. In doing so all of the drivers that had been installed by pc specialist were wiped. 'No problem' i thought, illl re install them from the disc... no dice. the driver disc was scratched to pieces and didnt work. so i had to downlaod them from the internet, taking some hours.
so far i am more than happy with the laptop, it boots up super fast, everything runs smoothly, the screen is crisp and clear ( standard matte panel ). build quality of the vortex 3 is very nice. comparing it to the msi skyfire chassis that i have at work, it is much nicer and solid feeling. Back lit keyboard is a nice touch. Sound is fine for me at least, not being a massive audiophile and comparable to other laptops. Sounds good to my ears anyway through headphones.
One thing that i am finding annoying is that the charging plug seems to come out of the laptop fairly easily. With the psu being so heavy, if for example you are lying on your bed, with the psu on the floor, it will pull the charging plug out very easliy with the slightest movements.
so all in all, im pretty happy and would recomend pc specialist based on my experiences.
Summary: would recomend
