Advantages: Free delivery, great prices, cashback, wide range of products

Play.com is based in Jersey and sells mostly electrical stuff like DVDs, CDs and games and are now selling other items like clothes, books and recently tickets for events.
I have ordered lots of items from Play.com and they have always arrived like expected and have been fairly cheap compared to most places.
Prices
The site is very good for prices and often is the cheapest shop, online and offline and is quite often cheaper than Amazon. I believe this is because they are in Jersey so have less taxes e.t.c which is fine by me.
Products
Play.com have a wide range of anything listed above especially electrical items like games and CDs and is similar to Amazon with the wide range of items.
Delivery
Another great thing about Play.com is it has free delivery on everything if you live in the UK and the delivery takes between about two days to a week to arrive which is quite good for free delivery. My items have always arrived within a week and have never gone missing.
Also looking at the website I found out that you can have free delivery on games, CDs, DVDs, books and clothes in lots of other countries for free! Some of the countries include: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands and many more!
Gift Vouchers
You can also buy gift vouchers from Play.com which would make a good gift for most people as they sell a lot of stuff (so their is probably something for everyone.) Maybe Dooyoo should add Play.com vouchers to the dooyoomiles redemption scheme! You can also use gift vouchers for Play Trade purchases which is good because you can not use Amazon vouchers at Amazon markeplace. Playtrade is explained in more detail further down.
Cashback
Another reason why I think Play.com are great is they offer cashback on all purchases unlike Amazon which makes them even better to shop with. If you have never heard of a cashback site, you should join one like Topcashback (reviewed separately) as they can save you a lot of money.
Play Trade
You can also sell and buy items from sellers now which is similar to Amazon marketplace and Ebay and does not have as many fees as Ebay. You can also use gift vouchers at Playtrade. I have never used Playtrade yet as the Play.com prices are normally almost the same!
Summary
Overall, Play.com is probably better than Amazon now for electrical items and is nearly always cheaper and is reliable and fair.

- 16/02/09 I like to check Amazon and Play before buying. The Jersey 'thing' comes about as they don't have to charge you VAT, as The Channel Islands sit outside the normal EU customs zone. In theory HM Customs COULD charge you duty as a cash-on-delivery supplement when the goods come into the UK but have decided to make £18 their lower benchmark for not bothering (presumably based on the cost of the paperwork and having to track the payment of about £2.70) - hence the fact that if you order a lot of disks from Play, they send them separately to keep the value of a packet below £18. Unfortunately the whole '£18' affair is being reviewed by HM Customs after a complaint from UK retailers that it's unfair competition. I notice that some of my recent Amazon purchases have also come from Jersey, presumably for the same reason. |
