Advantages: Pleasant delivery man, on time delivery, great discount for first time user
Disadvantages: Slightly steep delivery charges
I have tried many different grocery deliveries from Asda for a couple of months to Tescos which I did for over a year. I thought I would give Sainsbury's a try because they were offering £10.00 off a £50.00 spend for new customers (by this it meant customers who have never had a grocery delivery to their door before). So I thought why not if I am saving £10.00 as well as getting my nectar points (points from Sainsbury's reward card).
How to Register
So the process was pretty simple, I went onto http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/sol/index.js ;p I made an online account which took just a couple of minutes which included giving my name, address, telephone number, adding my nectar card to the account and selecting my preferences for email alerts (for example, for special offers).
Next I browsed their online grocery store. This includes several headings: 'fresh and bakery' which included bread, cakes etc which is baked freshly on site by Sainsbury's as well as the bought in bread, cakes etc by the well known brands like Hovis. The next heading is 'frozen' which speaks for itself (including all frozen foods), 'food cupboard' is the next title including tins, cereals, jams, rice, herbs and so on. The other titles included 'snacks and drinks', 'meal zone' for main courses, 'off license' for alcohol, 'health and beauty' for allsorts from shower gels to toothpaste, baby (for essentials for your baby), 'household' including toilet roll, laundry essentials, light bulbs, batteries and so the list goes on. The last two titles include 'pet', and 'newsagent and entertainment' (which also includes CDs and DVDs).
Each title when clicked on expands to include several more detailed titles so it is very easy to find what you are looking for. If you are looking for something specific you can always type it into the search box in the top right hand corner and it will display all results to what you have put. Alternatively you can search via 'offers' for each title which I did. However, searching via this option I found I added things to my basket that I would not have done if they had not been on offer so if you would like to prevent spending over a certain amount perhaps do not look at the offers it is far too tempting to purchase items that seem like good buys but which are not essentials.
Another useful element on the website is 'recipes and tips' where you can search via different recipes and it gives you all of the items you will need to make this at home. You can click on 'buy ingredients' underneath the recipe and it will take you to a page with all of those specific ingredients on to make the recipe. I thought this was very clever! However, it is very clever for Sainsburys to make more money out of you too!
For the second grocery shop and future grocery shops to save time there is a 'my usuals' title where previous orders of items are kept in case you simply want to add the same order as you did any weeks prior to save time. However, I never tend to buy the same things every week I like variety so I would not tend to use the 'my usuals' title to save time.
The last title which I love is the 'shopping list' you can write out your shopping list with commas between each items and then click find products and it gives you a list of all the options for those items in seconds. This is a great way to save time.
I am awful when purchasing online I take forever trying to find the best deals, promotional codes, cash back etc so I often think that it would be quicker for me to just go and do the actual shop in a supermarket. However, my boyfriend pointed out that by the time you have driven and used petrol, parked, found a trolley, gone around the aisles (and often pick up things you do not need from temptation), then queued at the tills, paid, packed all the shopping, put it all in the car and then use petrol to drive back, then unload the shopping at home - it really is less hassle clicking a few keys on the laptop whilst sitting on the sofa watching television!
So when I had added all of the items I required to my basket, I found a delivery slot which to my amazement was the next day at 11am-12pm (this was good considering I was placing my order at 7pm the night before). I think one hour time slots are fantastic whereas Tesco gives you a two hour slot. This slot cost £5.50 which was a lot but I did not mind because it was for early the next day and because of my promotional code. Then I added the promotional code to save myself £10.00 for it being my first online grocery shop I had to add my card details. These can be saved for the future or not. I chose to not just for security reasons. My billing details and address and contact details were saved on the page from when I had registered these details. Then I completed the order and I received a confirmation email which showed my balance for the items without my discounts, then my actual balance with the discounts shown and a list of the products. The email also stated that I could amend my order up until 11pm that night (which is amazing in my opinion) however, Tesco does beat them because you can amend an order up until 11.45pm the day before your delivery. I did however, amend my order I replaced the wholemeal bread with white poppy seed bread and it stated that to amend this I had to check out again with my bank details but it reassures you not to worry because they will not charge you twice.
More About Delivery Costs
Delivery charges vary from £2.75 to £6.75. There is no minimum order value which is very good if you are just stocking up on essentials. On certain days of the week if you place an order over £100 delivery is free of charge.
To Cancel an Order
To cancel an order you have to ring the customer services team which is rather annoying that you cannot do this online, they do not give you a time up to which you can cancel. Whereas with Tescos you can cancel the order yourself with a click of a button online up until midnight the night before your order the next day which is so quick, easy and simple.
So When my Delivery Arrived
It arrived ten minutes into my arrival slot at 11.10am so I was a happy customer. The man who delivered it was extremely friendly, he explained a bit about the service because I was a new customer, he explained that I had one substitute and asked if I still wanted it or else he could take it back and refund me. You can click whether you would like substitutes brought for out of stock items or not in the 'my preferences' section on your online account. The substitute he explained was in a blue plastic bag to distinguish it from my other items. My other items came in the regular orange Sainsbury's plastic bags. There were a lot of the bags for the number of items there were. He explained that this was because the shopping is done in different parts of the store. But I basically quickly unpacked my shopping by the door so as he could take the plastic bags with him to reuse for me.
He asked for my ID to check my age for the bottle of wine I had purchased which I was pleased he did it showed that even delivery drivers check for ID and they do not miss out doing it.
Before he left he asked for my signature and gave me my billing information with my receipt.
When I got in I checked everything off on my receipt, nothing was missed off and everything had been chosen with very good expiry dates on, so I was very pleased! The receipt also showed my nectar points.
It was a very good service from Sainsbury's, I actually thought the delivery of the goods was a much better and more pleasant transaction than that of Tesco, however, I find Tesco's online grocery shop easier to use than Sainsbury's but that is probably just because I am used to Tesco.
I will definitely purchase from Sainsbury's again for a delivery!
Summary: A great service from Sainsbury's as well as getting my nectar points!
