Advantages: Well designed website, loads of products and choice
Disadvantages: The basket doesn't take discounts off, so is slightly inaccurate
Tesco.com is the online store of the most popular supermarket in the UK. I have only recently converted to doing my shopping online and checked all the competition before settling on Tesco, mainly because Sainsbury's menus were too clunky, at the time Ocado didn't deliver to my area and Asda's website was rubbish.
So first of all you create a user account, providing your name and address and then you have access to mounds of pages of Tesco products, every time you click buy against a product it is added into a basket on the right hand side of the screen which tots up how much you have spent.
You can click on items to obtain descriptions of them and nutritional information. There are loads of options, you can search by category and sub-category, so can search under meat, fish, cereal, household products, wine, drinks, fruit and veg and many others and these then break down into further categories, you can also free type a name or food variety and it will bring up everything that matches.
I like the fact the site will always advise of cheaper options and there are special sections for value brands and discounter options. There is also a special offer section which is massive, listing all 3 for 2 offers, buy one get one free or half price offers. There are always loads and these allow you to get more for your money. The offers don't always show the discount in your basket which is incredibly annoying but they are taken off the final bill.
There are a wide variety of options for dietary specials such as vegetarianism, wheat free, alcohol free and many others, there are also really good guidelines in the product description.
There is a really good section with recipe ideas and it allows you to simply click on a recipe you like and all the ingredients are added to your basket which is really quite clever.
The checkout is easy enough and you simply move through to payment, ensuring you've added your club card number to get points for purchases and then you choose a date and time period for delivery, this generally costs between £3-£4 and the delivery slots are in two hour periods. Once you've done this you will be advised if there are any items unavailable for delivery and you are given the option to either make changes or make payment.
The delivery itself is fine its always been on time for me, we've never had a problem, although once the driver brought the items and didn't want us to sign for them, when he left we found there were 5 items that had been replaced as our choices weren't available. Tesco were really good when we called advising they would take the cost off these items away and refund us their costs and that we could keep the replacement items.
It's worth shopping here as Tesco regularly send discount vouchers and £10 off vouchers if you spend over £50. The website is well thought out and only Ocado's compares in terms of depth and quality. I have found shopping online allows me to check my cupboard and not impulse buy it also ensures I can manage my budget much better knowing exactly how much I'm spending and check my cook books for recipes while shopping. It's been reliable and good value so far.
Summary: I'm a convert to online grocery shopping

In fact I get more discount vouchers from sainsburys and I had never shopped with them until they sent me a voucher now sainsburys send me a voucher about every 6 months to try to gt me to move to them however nothing from Tesco not even the offer of free delivery. |

- 09/06/09 To get the most of this, do your Tesco shop through Mysupermarket.co.uk. It will then let you know cheaper alternatives or offers you have missed and so on, plus you can get ipoints in addition to your clubcard points for teh same shop :D Mysupermaket.com will send the basket for you to tesco so you actually then check out with tesco. It is dead easy and saves me £££ every month |

- 09/06/09 I don't know if it's an area thing but our delivery is always £5.50 and where we used to get money off fuel if we spent over £50 we now get school vouchers which are useless to us with no kids!
It's so convenient though we still regularly use online shopping at Tesco. |
