Advantages: Easy to compare items, simple online ordering

Disadvantages: Short shelf life products

I have had a Tesco clubcard for years, but recently updated my details so they have my email address. Shortly after I received an email for £10 off a £50 shop. An automatic 20% saving sounded good to me, so I logged on and ordered my first shop.

The online service is easy to use procvided you shop from a list. If you go to the supermarket and just pick up whatever takes your fancy its unlikely online shopping will suit you.

I like that you can compare the cost per 100g/kg/ml of products, so you can choose the best value flour or apples or what have you. You can also browse all current special offers, and it is handy having them in one place.

Delivery costs from £3 which is less than I would spend making a specific trip to the supermarket in petrol. It can cost up to £5 at peak times of the day so careful when you want it delivered. Ordering further in advance cuts the delivery cost. You can put in or alter an order up until midnight the day before delivery, which is useful when you realise you forgot the milk.

The downside of online shopping with Tesco is you have to wait in for 2 hours for your shopping to arrive. I have always found they arrive on time, and they text when they are on their way. Also you do tend to get the 'front of shelf' products with the short shelf life.

I also find it a challenge to estimate the weight of items I need - who knew £1 would buy 23 loose carrots?!

If any products you have ordered are out of stock they replace with similar. This happens quite frequently with the offers, and it really annoys me as I would not have ordered certain things if they were not half price etc. You do have the option to return the items with the delivery man, but hunting through all the bags to find them is a bit of an arduous task when you're busy.

My final issue with online grocery shopping is I miss the yellow stickers. Going into the store you often get the reduced price items in place of a full price one. This is not an option online and without the discount code I think my weekly shop would probably end up more expensive.

I'm still torn with what I think of online grocery shopping. On the one hand its convenient, but this conveneince is offset by always getting the products with a short shelf life.

Summary: Worth a go when you get sent a discount voucher.
