Advantages: great selction of clothes, it's different to the boring high street shops of where i live
Disadvantages: expensive, the sizes
The Black Rose in Camden has got to be one of my all time favourite shops. I go to Camden about half a dozen times a year and each time we cannot miss going into the Black Rose, it would be a crime not to go each time! When you enter the shop, you can see why - it's a fairly big shop absolutely full of Goth and punk clothing - you can find just about anything alternative here! Bondage trousers, velvet dresses, fluorescent fishnet tights, coffin shaped bags, cobweb t-shirts, Alchemy Gothic jewellery - the stuff you find in here is amazing, but there are draw backs. Most of the clothes are by the Omen clothing range, and in a lot of ranges, especially tops, they operate on a one-size-fits-all basis. I bought a mesh cobweb effect top and a fishnet top from there, and being a small girlie I had to take them in because they were just too big! It's ok for size 12s or over, but for small girls who like the close fit, you?re better off going somewhere else! The tights and stockings range is amazing, as is the makeup and hair dye. I love bright coloured accessories and tights etc, and this is what I usually end up buying from the Black Rose. They even have UV reactive AND fluorescent gels which means that you can look interesting in the daytime with your bright pink eye makeup and look amazing in the evening at the gig when your makeup glows under the lights! Result! Going back to the tights, they have fishnets, stripy tights and even ones with spiders on! I quite often cut them up and make sleeves, but even so, they're cheap and I think they look good! However most of the stock is not cheap. It is good quality, but I do think it is overpriced. Maybe the reason if because they're one of the few constant shops in Camden as opposed to the market stalls which sell cheap stuff, but of dubious quality. I think that the Black Rose mostly suits Goths. I am not a Goth, but I do like the clothing and I will sometimes wear Goth tops
or clothes with the rest of my grunger clothes. It's not my favourite Camden shop, but one of the best. My friends Charlotte and Dave are 'proper' Goths, and they seem to dispense so much money each time they go in! I quite often go on the website (www.blackrose.co.uk) and see if they've made any additions to the stock, and I've ordered some stuff online and the service was good, it was delivered quickly and I was pleased with my order.

- 21/10/02 Black Rose is a bit like a goth department store. Most of their stock doesn't change and there's nothing worse than turning up at your friends/the pub wearing identical clothing to every other goth.
My advice is to shop around more if you're really into your gothic clothing.
Oh, and the outfits for guys are pretty limited! |
