Crowned Review BeOS 5.0: A quick look at BE (882 words)

I was interested to see what BEOS was like . For a company to try and push a new operating system today seems like a bit of a suicide mission with the Linux vs Windows people each sticking to their bunker in the middle of no-mans land. I've only used the evaluation edition of BeOS which uses the same core as the final professional edition but is limited to working on a partition on an existing operating system . After the install - which was very speedy and a reboot I was amazed to get the thing to boot first time . Sounds like the holy grail for an O/S . It detected all devices without annoying pop up messages telling me what it was doing and all ...  Read the complete review

BeOS is a legacy free operating system designed by Be Inc. Unlike the many versions of Windows which have developed from Dos, and to a certain extent still sit on top of it, BeOS was designed from the ground up. Focussing mainly on the video and multimedia markets Be have created an operating system that is very stable while still being very fast. The early releases of BeOS were released for the retail market, but with version 5 Be changed direction and offered a downloadable Personal Edition for free, preferring to make money from the intenet appliance market. With Sony now licensing BeOS, it may even find it's way into the as yet un-confirmed Playstation 3. ...  Read the complete review

If you are looking for an alternative OS to Windows to slap on your X86 PC then why not give this one a try. As with everything today, installation is easy. You simply put the disk into the machine, and it auto starts. If you already have Windows on the system, you are given the option to partition the drive. If you do so the PC will reboot and run a modified Partition Wizard, type of program, allowing you to create a BeOS partition. If you don't want to go the whole hog, and just want a try, you can install the OS in a 500mb file on your Windows drive and run it that way, but a proper install is best. Once installed, configuration may be ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review What a OS (219 words)

I started to get bored with Windows about a year ago and so went to Linux just to see what it was like. Within a month Linux was gone I hated it and couldn't stand it any more. I sat wondering what was next until I started to hear about BeOS and how it was going to be the next big thing. They weren't wrong. It took 10 minutes to install it on it's own partition (despite the mag saying it wasn't possible) and from there I was off. It took 9 seconds to load fully and I was amazed. I started trying some of the software which which on the OS and I loved it. I started finding good websites which get me better software and with most of it free I was in ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review BeOS 5.0: To Be or not? Definelty not! (152 words)

I downloaded the free edition of BeOS 5, and was mad for several reasons. I hated the huge download, and was really looking forward to something useful that would give me inspiration to buy the pro edition. No such luck. I set it all up, and then tried to create a boot floppy, just in case. Then I tried to access it, but with no luck. I simply received a error message claiming that no boot volume could be found. Then I tried using the boot floppy to use it, but even that didn't work. I have contacted all the support groups for BeOS I could find. None of them could offer them any advoce that was of any use to me. If you have a solution to my problem, ...  Read the complete review
