Advantages: Stable, directx, powerful
Disadvantages: Needs a powerful PC, reformatting
I tried very hard to like windows 2000 profesional I really did. But since I have bought it I have had nothing but trouble. When I got home after purchasing it I was all excited. I tried to install it only to restart 4 times because I got a "fatal error" at 78% completion. When I finally did get it installed, the Microsoft "Plug n Play" drivers made a complete mess of my new monitor. Then, when I finally thought everything was going to be ok, everything had been set up it was all down hill. I shut down my computer for the day and when I came back a few hours later and I got a "Windows Protection Fault - Please restart your computer" error, before windows even started. After countless hours of tech support I learned that Windows had messed with many of my hardware settings. On a positive note once I got it up and runnng it up and running I found it had a very simple interface which, with a little practice, was mastered in no time. Also Windows is a hugely popular operating system meaning that if you are a developer your programer or just a normal user your files will be compatible with more people than with say OS 9. This is a great Operating System for those who are new to the high-tech era or are not willing to commit the time to learning a more complicated system. One very positive thing is that the new windows 2k uses the NT file system which provides greater stability. Unfortunatley with this great inprovement also come the great pain of reformatting your hard drive to use this new filesystem. In short reformatting means deleating all your old data. Which means any old files or programs you had on your computer before the install are gone.
