Advantages: Fast, PnP, Very stable

Disadvantages: Expensive, need more driver

Windows 2000 is one of the best operating system ever released by Microsoft. I have used every single Microsoft's operating system there is: MS-DOS 2.10/6.22, Windows 3.0/3.1, Windows 95/95ORS2, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98/98SE, and I am finally satisfied with Windows 2000. To me, Win 2000 incorporates Windows 98's hardware friendly PnP and Windows NT's stability. I have been using Win NT for about a year, there were very few crashes. Even if this happens, only the culprit application is terminated, without the rest being affected. Then I switched to Win98SE to be able to use new hardware and play games. The price I paid is frequent crashes and multiple restart. Sometimes as often as twice a day (I used my for more than 10 hours a day, both for work and leisure). Not to mention valuable work lost. I missed NT's stability so much, but can't afford to switch back simply because hardware support is too weak.

Then came Windows 2000, which solves all these problems. The plug & play feature makes Win2000 hardware friendly. In fact, Win2000 seems to be more stable than Win NT. Also, it is faster, even faster than Win98.

Driver for some hardware is still missing, but this is due to manufacturers' laziness. I am still waiting for Logitech QuickCam's Win2000 driver, which Logitech promised to delivery b4 end of May 2000 (another empty promise). Win2000 is also expensive.

All in all, the upgrade is worth it. When more drivers are out, Win2000 will be the perfect OS.

Good luck.

It is now 17 months since I wrote my previous comment. I am glad to say that I now have NO problem getting good drivers for Windows 2000. I would now advise PC users as follows: WHEN A NEW OPERATING SYSTEM IS RELEASED, WAIT AT LEAST 18 MONTHS BEFORE BUYING OR INSTALLING IT. This way, you can be sure that drivers will be available & that most of the "bugs" will be ironed out.

I'm not sure I agree with you that Windows 2000 is the perfect OS. true, if you are technically minded, and can tolerate a lack of driver support for some products, then it is excellent.
If you use your PC primarily from home, however, I do not hink it is worth the expense or hassle unless you really know what you are doing. Windows 98 / SE / ME has far beter driver supprt, and most people should be able to find games that run fine on their systems. Its problem is security / stability.
But like I say, if you are prinarily a home user, using a dial-up internet account and playing games - steer clear of Win 2000 for now.....
Wait for Whistler!!

I actually started my computer experience just over 2 years ago with Windows 98. What was I doing wrong?- it was always freezing & crashing! This only happenned to you about twice a day?- that must have been because you were either so experienced, or because you only used your PC for a MAXIMUM of 5 minutes per day! I very quickly bought the 98 second edition & found some improvement in stability, say about 25% less problems; but this was still far from satisfactory to me & my wife, fed up with my absence due to the long hours I was spending reformatting (I can now do it BLINDFOLDED) & generally just trying to keep the PC in a reasonably usable condition, persuaded me to buy the 2000 Professional upgrade.(That was a LONG sentence!). Now life is almost totally Roses, at least as far as my PC is concerned. Now it is extremely rarely that my PC demands attention. Yes, I did have some difficulty locating drivers for my Modem, Printer & Scanner (ps. anyone with a Umax Astra 2200 scanner, go to the Umax GERMAN site for the drivers!). Fortunately & have managed to Dual Boot my PC, with 98se & 2000 both on the same Hard Disk; this meant that I was still able to use my modem on 98se to download the modem drivers for 2000! In short, 2000 is WONDERFUL unless you want to primarily play games. CONGRATULATIONS ON A WELL WRITTEN & INFORMATIVE OPINION!
